There are so many variables influencing gaming laptop prices. The hardware they have in them can be adjusted and as soon as we change it it becomes hard to know how one laptop compares to another. This laptop review will take a look at how well the Dell Alienware M17 R2 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 can run today’s latest games and what sort of frame rates this Dell Alienware M17 R2 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 might achieve. Then we will look at its release price and summarise how good its price in regards to its gaming performance. From there you can compare this laptop and get a good idea of whether this is a good value choice for your gaming needs today and into the future.
Is the Dell Alienware M17 R2 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Good
Processor - A Core i7-9750H 6-Core 2.6GHz CPU that is housed in this laptop is excellent for modern AAA gaming during 2020. The 6 cores that this processor has is excellent and very capable for today and future AAA gaming.
Graphics Card - The graphics card we find in this laptop is a good option for modern AAA game releases in 2020. This GPU has 6GB of VRAM. This is considered a good amount of VRAm for modern games but some graphics solutions have more.
System Memory - A laptop with 16GB of system memory, like this laptop, makes it an excellent amount of RAM for the AAA gaming needs of 2020 and into the future.
Screen Size - We were looking for 17 inch panels as the gaming standard for top tier gaming laptops. You can certainly game on smaller laptops but we have found that often the extra physical space helps provide 2020 games with the chance to read and make out in game menus and details that smaller panels can struggle to display clearly. So this 17.3" panel is an excellent gaming laptop choice for screen size.
Refresh Rate - If you want your gaming laptop to push past 60FPS, then make sure your laptop display panel has a higher refresh rate than 60Hz. Not all laptop manufacturers clearly state the screen refresh rate. If it is not clear, assume it is 60Hz. The laptop only turn out FPS (frames per second) as high as its screens refresh rate. 60hz refresh rate gets a max of 60FPS in all games, regardless of the hardware’s power in your laptop. After considering that, we can see that this laptop has an excellent 144Hz gaming laptop refresh rate. But otherwise for peace of mind, try and find a laptop panel that is more than 60Hz and that will still be ok.
The big one in any gaming PC is making sure the graphics card is up to the task of modern gaming. And this is of course the same for choosing the right gaming laptop as well. Therefore we will be considering this laptop’s hardware in relation to its overall price and how well it could run modern demanding or popular games like Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs Legion and Assassins Creed: Valhalla. This is done in relation to its native 1080p resolution at Ultra video settings to give us something to compare against other laptops. The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile in this machine is currently capable of running 492 games at minimum system requirements of the 500 most demanding games available today. Where as it is capable of running 352 games of the top 500 most demanding recommended system requirements.
We really want to see how the Dell Alienware M17 R2 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 will compare across all permutations of the Alienware M17 R2 model range. This will give us a good sense of how well it sits in terms of cost to performance within its own lineup, and will better help us decide if this laptop represents good value to us today.
The Dell Alienware M17 R2 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 is getting a 8.6 for its P2P score out of 10. This relative value will change as game performance, hardware costs and laptop expectations adjust over time. This laptop’s configuration, when compared to its own Alienware M17 R2 lineup, is currently placed at 1st once we order it by the price to performance figure. Obviously scoring towards the 1st position is preferable.

Ok finally lets see it against Cyberpunk 2077. Here our laptop is 24% better.
A good comparison in terms of graphical power for our review model would be to compare it to one of the most powerful GPU focused laptop’s around today. This type of comparison can show us what another laptop, with a top end graphics hardware solution, can deliver and in turn provide us a relative point of laptop Graphics Card cost comparison. Our comparison GPU focused laptop today that we have selected is a MSI GT76 Titan i9-10900K RTX 2080 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 4K, which comes loaded with the GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB card. If you are looking for future proof laptops it doesnt take long before people are exploring the 4K panel laptops, but are they really the right choice or should you be focusing on a top end laptop that has the hardware to deliver 1080p gaming. The Dell Alienware M17 R2 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2’s 17.3" physical panel produces a native 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall. The refresh rate of a 4K laptop panel is often 60Hz. This figure sets a 60 frames per second cap that locks a game to no matter the capability of the hardware in the 4K laptop. However, today’s AAA games, when running at Ultra graphics settings and 4K resolution, usually require hardware that we don't see in laptops or desktops to even reach that 60FPS cap. The Dell Alienware M17 R2 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop’s monitor can be picked up with 60Hz, 144Hz refresh rate versions.
So more likely, you will have to lower the screen resolution on your 4K laptop to 1080p or 1440p to run modern AAA games at a frame rate that doesnt stutter. By lowering the pixel count, your game will start to look blurry, as you move away from your laptop monitor’s native resolution in order to get more frames per second. Which immediately defeats the purpose of getting a 4K laptop monitor for gaming. A 1080p laptop can still have some powerful gaming hardware in it and if it is good enough to run AAA games at larger resolutions like 4K or 1440p then attach it to a desktop monitor while you are at home and stationary. If the desktop monitor is pretty good then it wont have a 60Hz refresh rate limiting its FPS count in game. And is likely to be a whole lot more enjoyable playing on a 24 inch or larger monitor than the more standard 15 or 17inch screen normally found on gaming laptops.
4K streaming could be a viable reason to consider 4K over 1080p laptop panels.
We think don't spend your extra cash on getting a 4K laptop to game on, as it's likely to feel disappointing to buy a super shiny new 4K laptop, then have to lower the resolution while playing your games, delivering a blurry in-game experience, and only getting up to a maximum 60FPS due to the usual 60Hz 4K panel restriction.
The 1440p gaming monitor that has a great price today and should be a nice accompaniment to the Dell Alienware M17 R2 i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop is the ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS. To help provide some further information into this desktop monitor price trends we saw it cost a recorded low of $272.99, which we tracked on 5th Aug 2020.
The 4K Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz display is our current suggestion if you wanted to grab a desktop monitor. With a $829.99 price at the moment it also has a 144Hz refresh rate. During these recent weeks we have price tracked this 4k monitor and noticed that it has increased its price by $799, so keep an eye out for deals, as this great value monitor might still be found for cheaper. [Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
4K streaming could be a viable reason to consider 4K over 1080p laptop panels.
Hold that 4K gaming laptop cash for perhaps a more powerful GPU or fancy mouse or headset. That's our usual advice. Otherwise it might be a bit disheartening to pay for a 4K gaming laptop, and then be forced to turn the resolution down on modern games to get them to run smoothly.
