The Gigabyte Aero 17 XB (2020) i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop review we are going to do today will look into how its purchase price stacks up against the performance on offer from the hardware housed inside it. We will also be taking a look at today’s more demanding games to see some Gigabyte Aero 17 XB (2020) i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop gaming frame rates to help you judge if the value to money ratio is a good deal or not.
Is the Gigabyte Aero 17 XB (2020) i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 good as a gaming laptop? Good
Processor - This processor is excellent, and it meets and runs AAA titles released during 2021 with little problem. The 6 cores that this processor has is excellent and very capable for today and future AAA gaming.
Graphics Card - This GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile graphics card is a good option for modern 2021 gaming and can run a number of AAA games smoothly. Modern AAA gaming uses GPU VRAM to help deliver a smooth performance in game. The graphics solution we find here has 6GB of VRAM. This is a good amount for modern gaming.
System Memory - This amount of RAM, 8GB, is a good quantity of laptop RAM for modern 2021 games.
Screen Size - A laptop with a 17.3" screen size, like we find on this laptop, puts it into the excellent category for mobile laptops and top end 2021 gaming. Of course it always needs the hardware to backup this up.
Refresh Rate - Refresh rates can be hard to see, when the laptop reseller doesn't make it clear. Assume 60Hz if this is the case. Ideally for a gaming laptop you want 120Hz. This means the games you run can get up to 120 frames per second, assuming the hardware inside them is powerful enough to deliver that FPS. The refresh rate caps a games deliverable FPS even if the hardware can deliver more FPS than the Hz. After considering that, we can see that this laptop has an excellent 144Hz gaming laptop refresh rate. But otherwise for peace of mind, try and find a laptop panel that is more than 60Hz and that will still be ok.
Getting a good price to performance gaming laptop is what we are all trying to do when looking for our next mobile machine. The key component in this is usually the graphics card. So we will of course be considering this hardware setup and how well it could run modern popular games like Grand Theft Auto VI, Battlefield 6 and Resident Evil 8 to help us know if this graphics card and laptop is a good price to performance point. We do this by considering the gaming frame rates achieved at its native 1080p resolution while the games would be running at Ultra video settings. Now this comes with the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile installed as the mobile graphics card, and at the moment it is capable of running 489 games at their minimum graphics system specs and then running 309 recommended specs of today’s top 500 most demanding games.
Have you been looking for the best gaming laptop for your buck? Well you have probably encountered what we have, which is that, only certain laptops are normally reviewed and even then the review is often using games that are now getting out of date. So we decided to factor in all permutations of the Aero 17 XB (2020) model range and compare them against the price adjustments those hardware variations incur when you change a GPU, for example. And so we have created this Gigabyte Aero 17 XB (2020) i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop price to performance review with a P2P rating to help standardise our comparisons.
Our price and performance review leads us to allocate all laptops a P2P rating out of 10, which is relative to all laptops for comparison purposes and gets adjusted over time as the prices for hardware adjust and new more capable hardware is created. This laptop is currently given a 8.1 for P2P out of 10. This version of the Aero 17 XB (2020) laptop is currently positioned at 1st when ordered in the range lineup for Price to Performance value rating. The closer to 1st place the better gaming performance it deliver for its price.

It's good to see how this Aero 17 XB (2020) laptop compares to models outside of its own model range as well. If we look at the very best P2P laptop, the ASUS TUF A15 R7 4800H GTX 1660 Ti 16GB RAM 512GB M.2, our laptop has 101% worse performance difference when comparing its price to performance rating. That top laptop currently has a listed price of $999.00. Again only comparing against Price to Performance we can see that the second best model in today’s P2P ranking list is the Acer Nitro 5 2020 R5 4600H GTX 1650 Mobile 16GB RAM 512GB M.2 laptop, and our laptop is 90% worse when compared against this price to performance rating. The price of the 2nd best laptop is listed as $853.00.
If you are wondering if this laptop is relatively well endowed in the CPU department then let's take a look at how it stacks up against the current best priced CPU focused laptop available today, to see its relative performance. This top tier processor focused laptop is currently the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2021) R9 5900HX RTX 3080 8GB Max-Q 64GB RAM 2.0TB M.2 1080p 165Hz. With a Ryzen 9 5900HX 8-Core 3.3GHz CPU in it that performs 53% better compared to our laptop’s Core i7-9750H 6-Core 2.6GHz.
Interestingly we can see 443 games recommended system requirements are lower in performance than our laptop’s CPU performance capability. This is when we look at the top 500 most demanding games around today. For minimum system requirements in this same area the number is 499 games are worse than our cpu performance, again looking at the top 500 most demanding minimum system requirements.
Let's take a look and see how well our Core i7-9750H 6-Core 2.6GHz compares against today’s most popular games. Against the recommended CPU specs for Grand Theft Auto VI our laptop is 3% better, and compared to Battlefield 6 it is 12% better , where as against Resident Evil 8 it delivers 9% worse performance.
Shall we see if our review laptop holds out favourably against a top GPU performance focused laptop PC that is currently available. A good laptop to compare against, that is GPU focused, would be the Dell Alienware M17 R4 (2021) i9-10980HK RTX 3080 16GB Mobile 32GB RAM 512GB M.2 1080p 144Hz. This showcases one of the laptops for the current cheapest price, while still housing one of the most powerful laptop GPUs. It comes with a GeForce RTX 3080 16GB Mobile graphics card slotted inside it, which can deliver 73% better performance when compared to our GPU, GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Mobile from our review laptop.
Today’s performance comparison for all games shows our laptop GPU can currently meet or beat 309 game’s recommended system requirements when we put the 500 most demanding games into a list. With a list of 500 Minimum system specs put ina similar most demanding order this changes to it being able to run 489 games.
When compared to the recommended graphics requirements of the most popular games today, like Grand Theft Auto VI our laptop GPU is 28% worse in performance. Compared to Battlefield 6 our laptop graphics performance is 18% worse.
This Gigabyte Aero 17 XB (2020) i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 laptop has a 17.3" physical screen size and displays 1920 pixel by 1080 pixels tall native 1080p resolution. Is this 1080p laptop good for your needs though or should you instead be looking to buy a 4K screen mobile PC rather than this? With 60Hz being the usual screen refresh rate on 4K laptop panels this would cap a game to run at no more than 60 frames per second, even if the 4K laptop hardware could deliver more. And then most AAA games require more powerful hardware than a laptop houses to play stable 4K Ultra graphics setting games, even at a passable but, some would consider, a bit low, 60FPS. It’s worth noting that the Gigabyte Aero 17 XB (2020) i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 8GB RAM 256GB M.2 panel is available with the following panel refresh rates 144Hz.
We can always lower the game’s displayed screen resolution to something like 1080p or 1440p which is below the 4K laptop’s native pixel count. This will get a more stable game experience, increasing a game’s FPS that might be needed across a number of modern AAA games on a 4K laptop. However, getting away from the laptop’s more native 4K resolution, will take away in-game graphics definition. Not an ideal situation, playing blurry games on your new 4K laptop. And if your laptop does have the power to run some of the modern games in 4K Ultra, you are likely to want to enjoy them on a larger than 17inch laptop panel. So at a later point perhaps buy a dedicated monitor for your desk that isnt 60Hz restricted, for those games, thus keeping your laptop for mobility.
So why would you get a 4K capable laptop? If you enjoy movies or Netflix at 4K and have access to 4K content via those types of services then perhaps the quality of 4K resolution on a 17inch panel would be a great experience, but we still think you wouldn't miss that 4K.
As you can probably gather from the information above, its probably not worth the extra cash for a 4K laptop if gaming is your Laptop purpose. 1080p is likely plenty and has enough alternative gaming options for when you want better resolution. It feels like you might not get what you were after if you picked up a shiny new 4K laptop, then was needing to lower game resolution, while getting blurry in-game experience and achieving a max 60FPS when you could push the hardware into better frame rates.
Here is today’s best priced 1440p gaming monitor that could accompany the Gigabyte Aero 17 XB (2020) i7-9750H GTX 1660 Ti 8GB RAM 256GB M.2, ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV 27 inch 1440p 75Hz 5ms IPS that is currently priced at $307.73. We have seen this desktop 1440p monitor recorded at a low price on 9th Mar 2021, where we saw it was costing $229.99.
Why not grab a monitor like the Asus Predator XB273K 27 inch 4K GSYNC IPS 1ms 144Hz 4K screen. It is currently coming in with the best price tag in the 4K range of monitors that we are watching, at $629.99 and has a 144Hz refresh rate. We have noticed that this 4K monitor has raised its price by $580 recently. And while it is a good 4K monitor even at this current price, it could probably be found for a bit cheaper. Interestingly we spotted this 4k monitor at its lowest recorded price on 13th Nov 2020, where it was priced up as $549.99.
[Note - check that monitor display connectors are compatible between a monitor and a laptop before purchase]
Maybe you are hoping to enjoy your 4K streamed movies and TV shows while on the move. And if you have access to this 4K content and it's your prime use for your new laptop then perhaps it's worth considering a 4K panel, rather than this 1080p.
At the moment our advice would be, stick to the 1080p laptop panels for now. Your laptop remains portable and 4K laptop’s just aren't quite there yet. The 4K needs to be a no brainer but at the moment you will still have to lower resolution in game to get playable but sub par visuals that still can't raise above 60FPS.
