Xbox One Consoles Are Smoking

Written by Jon Sutton on Tue, Nov 26, 2013 11:45 AM

Microsoft would obviously be quick to pounce on any suggestion that Xbox One’s launch was smoking, and it would be fair to say that it’s got off to a bit of a flyer, but there are reports surfacing in the Xbox One support forum that the next-gen console is smoking, literally.

Two different users so far have reported an amber light appearing on the console’s external power brick. Upon plugging it into another power outlet the console began smoking through the top vent before finally giving up the ghost…

Microsoft has been quick to act on the issue, offering a two-week delivery service to get kitted out with a working console. There’s no word yet on whether it’s a brand new console or just refurbed, but it can’t be the greatest feeling at a console launch to be lumped with a smoking Xbox One.

The launch window for any new console is always a slightly dodgy period, the infamous launch of the Xbox 360 was beset by broken consoles and the dreaded RRoD. The Playstation 3 didn’t fare much better, with the YLoD lurking like a ticking time-bomb inside the first-generation consoles.

Microsoft is of course recommending if your console does start picking up a 20-a-day habit, unplug your console from the mains and get it shipped in for repairs.

Is it worth it to be an early adopter?

Do you think both the Xbox One and PS4 are going to see failure rates on the scale of what we saw last generation?

I think Xbox one needs something to solve it's burning problem which is a water cooling system and they will be fine,but......they can not do that why because that's only for PCs O.K. Microsoft.
By the way Microsoft do not forget to shake hands with your new Kinect for me.

In typical Microsoft fashion. How am I not surprised by this? A handful of my friends have already had this problem with their console. I don't think corporations ever learn from their mistakes-if they are going to release a "next-gen" space-galaxy-ship-cruiser-laser-junk, they should at least fix the damn problems with the thing then release it-then maybe they'll be getting less hate mail.

True that. They make more money from early releases than from a good quality finished product half a year later. Just look at Battlefield 3 and 4. Neither were finished AT ALL. They are all under pressure to pump products out for the benefit of shareholders, not the consumer.

then the blue light of death, now this...
i wonder why people are still surprised about these problems at launch.
what really happened is that microsoft and sony raced against each other to release their console on the market, and now these hardwares are barely finished, full of problems.
and it's all microsoft's fault.
At the release of previous gen, the ps3 arrived 1 year later after the 360. but the 360 was super buggy at launch while the ps3 had no major problems.
But now sony is forced to follow the rush or they'll get owned by xbox. And they know that since there is either a sony or xbox logo on their stuff, it will sell.
"let them buy the stuff first ! they'll play later"

Agreed Tzz. People naturally lump PC in with consoles simply because they both can be used for gaming. But that's like putting a Ferarri and a Honda in the same class, simply because both are cars. The comparison is thin at best, they are totally different beasts each meant for a different audience.

Oh believe me I know a heavily modified Civic (or Hayabusa Smart Car..seriously look it up) can go head to head with high-end luxury Super Cars. But there are and will always be major differences. The Ferarri driver will always have a nicer ride, a smoother feel beneath him. The Honda would require massive modifications and a major time investment for both installing and tuning, and would require constant upkeep for both. Meanwhile the Ferarri is out-of-the-shop ready to roll, and looks 1000 times better. Mods can get you close, but never all the way "there" as it were.

Dude, It's not about maxing the settings. A modern gaming rig for 500 dollars ( same as the xbox one ) can play modern games at 1080p without this type of trouble. Also, console games are way more expensive in the long run compared to PC games so it would be much better to buy a decent gaming rig on an EMI rather than indulge in this travesty.

What? Upgrading your PC can be expensive in the long run. Tell me if I'm wrong - but you can't change hardware in a console, which won't make it more expensive. Also, ps4 is kinda even with a mid-range computer. When it comes to games, yeah it does cost more, but it's not a huge difference.

@TOTTALOTTA
Love u man, I thought that as well. Not to mention things like the 30 FPS cap on consoles and the fact that some XBOX ONE games supposedly run on 720p and 900p which is not reasonable for that price.

I advocate PC-gaming, but that doesn't mean I hate consoles. Some people just prefer them instead and that's understandable :) I've been a console gamer and it can be nice sometimes to just lie back in the sofa while playing on a huge screen.

A good computer can last a long time. For example, the HD 7850 which I am using now is better than the XBOX ONE GPU in terms of raw performance and cost slightly more than a hundred bucks. It has been playing all my games in 1080p on high until now and is probably going to last at least until 2017 before I have to upgrade to play games. The same for the other parts.

PS4 RAM is faster and it has 8 GB which you haven't. PS4 GPU is equivalent to yours, but it beats yours because of the great optimization consoles deliver. I would say PS4 beats your rig thanks to the optimization and the great communication the components have in a console.

13:58 Nov-26-2013

My RAM is 4 GB but in game usage never goes beyond 2 GB for me so 8 GB is worthless. Also, the console games at 30 FPS is never going to beat my buttery smooth 60 FPS. A 100% better. Also, I can overclock it whenever I want and my card currently performs at the level of a 660ti ( checked with benchmarks) at an overclock of 1115/6200 at 59 degrees WITHOUT smoking.

Memory latency and frequency accounts for about 10% performance increase ( check any number of benchmarks you want to) and even if GDDR5 memory has a higher memory bandwidth, It's not properly utilized. for example, 30 FPS.

not smooth 60 FPS in games like Crysis 3 (very high settings). Also, Ps4 runs killzone shadowfall's multiplayer at 60 fps. RAM usage, what are you talking about? You understand that Windows alone uses memory? Games like battlefield recommends 8 GB of RAM for max settings.

Yes, at worst it can go down to console level speeds but settings can be turned down if the experience Isn't good enough or overclocking can help. I'm taking about ALL games at 60 FPS and not just an exceptional one or two on consoles .I'm serious about 2 GB ( system wide usage with almost all the games I've played) . Even if it takes more, PC RAM can be UPGRADED and RAM is dirt cheap.

i built my rig here for just under £450 which i believe is about the same as the Xbone, yet my PC can run everything.... and i mean everything i have thrown at it in high/ultra with at least 45-60+ fps. worth every penny unlike a console.

its just 2 incidents. these guys could have dropped the freaking thing and broke have the stuff in it and then say its smoking... ofc its smoking. if they blocked the fans it could cause the console to overheat and start smoking too or whatever. microsoft must have pissed their pants though when they heard of it :P. all things considered i think both consoles launched with minimal hardware failures. sony and microsoft learn from their mistakes (only when the mistakes cost them lots of money).
