Some PSN Features Disabled For EU PlayStation 4 Launch

Written by Andrew Moynihan on Thu, Nov 28, 2013 5:15 PM

Sony has announced that a few of the PS4's launch day PSN services will be switched off to ensure a smoother and more stable launch for the PlayStation 4 in Europe tonight.

Euroblog manager Fred Dutton explained that the disabled services are designed to improve the overall service to users ...

"Following the successful launch of PS4 in North America on the 15th November, we have seen an unprecedented influx of players onto PSN. When we launch in Europe on Friday, once again, we are expecting record sales and record numbers of people logging onto PSN at similar times, alongside the North American players already on PSN,"

We want to make sure that your online experience is positive. To help ensure that this happens, we have made the decision to switch off a couple of features for European customers on day one. These features will then be switched back on a few days later, once the intensity of launch day calms down."

Features that will initially be disabled include What's New (which shows you what your friends are up to and - shockingly - new things) and the Content Information Screen (which shows what your friends are doing in relation to a specific game). Assuming Sony's plan to reduce pressure on PSN works, all other features including multiplayer should be running as usual.

The North American PSN server was temporarily out of action when the next-gen Sony console first launched a fortnight ago due to the sheer density of traffic trying to get online to download the day one update. Although normal service was resumed fairly quickly, Sony are undoubtedly hoping there will be no such glitch for the EU market.

Will you be getting a PS4 when it launches at midnight tonight?

Do you think switching off these features will manage to improve the service, or do you think the traffic will still overwhelm the PlayStation Network.

Let us know your thoughts on this and other next-gen issues in the comments.

don't you just wish they did the conversion from dollars correctly instead of making ours cost more just because of a currency difference

Bear in mind that when you see prices in dollars they are without tax.

They charge more than the rate of exchange because they can. I read an article last year about such disparities in price between the U.S and most of Europe and it showed that the U.K, where I am, was paying up to %20 moer than the exchange rate price, this includes import cost and duty tax. Companies do this as they know they can charge more and people will still cough up for it as they don't know any better. It's not just consoles that suffer too, games, accessories and even standard toys suffer such financial hits :(

If you would read the whole article then you would notice that the final price of the PS4 in Serbia is still unknown. Take a look at the text below the picture.

Should be a rather seamless launch in the EU. Can't wait for the consoles to really start taking off and developers to show what they can do with them.

I'm happy to see that a company has finally released that launch days are the worst day for any online service and have actually decided to do something about rather than just through their hands up saying it will be better later

I can see Sony getting over 1 million by the end of tomorrow, Microsoft have been targeting the US with their new features and that has left european gamers feeling left out.
