It’s been eerily quiet on the Star Wars front as of late. Normally bombarded by game after game, it appears Disney’s acquisition of the Star Wars license has given the franchise perhaps a much needed rest.

Still, expect all this to change pretty quickly ahead of Star Wars: Episode VII’s 2015 release, and the torrent begins now with the announcement of Star Wars: Attack Squadrons, a free-to-play 16-player space combat game coming to PC…

Star Wars: Attack Squadrons is the debut title from fledgling developer Area 52 Games, a flight combat game that pits you in the iconic ships seen in the films, including Tie Fighters, X-Wings and more. The game will feature three modes of PvP action at launch, featuring Free For All, Team Dogfight and Base Defense, with kills netting you points with which to upgrade your ship and purchase new items.

Star Wars: Attack Squadrons is expected to launch for PC in 2014, check out the announcement trailer below to tide you over for now.

Eager for some more Star Wars action?

Would you have preferred a full retail release or are you happy with F2P?

I have a bad feeling, that this game will be one of those that abuses the microtransaction system. But I really hope that I'm wrong.

anyone who hopes you're right is silly, microtransaction abuse is what is mostly killing the F2P market, minus a few games with sensible MTs. So yes, I hope you're wrong too.

I'll definitely play it. Dunno if I'll like it. It'll be interesting to see what they do with it.
Trailer looks pretty lame though. Let's hope the game isn't P2W.

That trailer was uh....really bad...and this is coming from someone who leaps at everything Star Wars. But that's just the trailer. Hopefully the game will be good, will definitely be trying this when it comes out. :)

F2P is fine, just as long as microtransactions aren't required, or not used altogether, I don't want this to be like SWTOR @_@
On the plus side it looks cool, here's hoping the system requirements will be light, it'll be well optimized, or I"ll have a new PC.

SWTOR is awesome until you see how EA is charging you for everything. I mean seriously 25% less exp, all cool rewards locked, everything you see has to remind you of how the game sucks if you are f2p? Another beautiful game ruined by EA!

exactly what i meant, SWTOR isn't bad, but unless you subscribe, you get shafted with all of the features, HOW do they expect people to subscribe if they only get a fraction of the game? It's like the devs of game dev tycoon releasing a torrent of the game that made it impossible to win due to piracy, you get screwed over, and in SWTOR it's impossible to win with only 2 action bars with some classes (like bounty hunter, I've heard.), SO, people will think it's not worth subscribing to.

I've got a bad feeling bout this game, that it might fail badly.

We know nothing about this game and already it will 'fail badly'. Which boogeyman is it now, the F2P thing or the established franchise? F2P is becoming a real thing (what with titles such as Neverwinter, Dota 2, Path of Exile, ...) and we've had many successful revivals of and many new entrants into many different IPs. Moreover, Star Wars has seen a lot of great games in the past and developed by a new studio their (nonexistent) reputation hardly warrants your conclusion. They're making Star Wars games: if good - awesome! we get a Star Wars game. If not - who cares? there's a million of 'em.

Signed up for the beta. Who are Area 52 Games, though? I can't recall anything done by this developer.
