The upcoming Faster Than Light: Advanced Edition has been detailed in a new blog post by developer Subset Games. The free update to the well-received spacefaring roguelike will come packing a whole new race called The Lanius, metallic scavengers that rely on absorbing minerals to sustain themselves.

As well as this the update will include new ships, layouts, drones and a host of gameplay refinements, with yet more still to be revealed…

The Lanius have had their introduction to FTL explained by their cyclical lifestyle, laying dormant until awoken by intergalactic wars of the scent of a dying civilisation. The reawakened Lanius will have been spotted in the abandoned and war-torn sectors of Federation Space as they seek out metals for survival.

The Lanius are unique in that they don’t require life support to live in deep space, instead draining the oxygen from any compartment they inhabit, obviously causing a few hiccups when it comes to diplomatic relations.

Other than this, FTL: Advanced Edition comes with a sparkly new Lanius ship and alternate layout, as well as Type C layouts for eight of the original spaceships, providing new features that capitalise on the new content being included. New Shield, Anti-Combat and Ion Intruder drones provide expanded gameplay options.

FTL: Expanded Edition is expected to release in early 2014 alongside an iPad port. The expansion will be free to those who’ve already purchased the base game.

Will this be enough to drag you back in?

What do you think of the Lanius?
