Tivitas Reveal Keyboard-Replacing Sinister Gamepad

Written by Jon Sutton on Thu, Jan 9, 2014 5:30 PM

It was teased earlier it the week but now we finally have some concrete details on Tivitas’ mental looking Sinister controller.

We’re not sure what had been ingested with this design was thought up but there’s something about its Terminator-chic and realistic haptic feedback that’s strangely alluring. Just looking at it's enough to hear an echo of the Iron Man riff…

Tivitas claim the haptic feedback will allow you to “feel the lifelike recoil of your gun or the rumblings of a full scale explosion on your PC.” Sounds like it’d be pretty cool if it works, lets just hope it’s better than that overhyped rumble pak bundled in with Lylat Wars/Starfox 64.

Rather than risk the ire of PC gamers across the land by doing away with the tried and trusted mouse, Tivitas’ Sinister works alongside a mouse for increased precision.

The gist of Sinister looks to be that you wear it like a globe on your hand, letting you rule over your gaming empire with a literal iron fist. There’s just one thumb-operated joystick on the Sinister gamepad, trading the now-traditional secondary joystick for the precision of a gaming mouse. Whether this is the best of both worlds or the jack-of-all-trades master of none is still in the balance.

A suite of modular face buttons can be moved and rearranged on the fly, allowing you to customise your set-up on a game by game basis.

Tivitas CTO Chris Zhao-Holland said “we want to bring the advantages of console controllers over to the PC. For many games today you can plug an Xbox controller into a PC but in many of those games you end up losing the keyboard and mouse functionality.

Tivitas have said it’s still very much in its alpha stage at the moment but are hoping to have the finished product by the end of 2014.

Do you think Sinister and mouse could potentially be a better setup than keyboard and mouse?

Is technology like this too much of an adjustment for gamers used to classic play styles?

Just draw a half eaten apple on it, and it will sell like water.

The best part about this post is that people born in the pre-1960s wouldn't understand what the half eaten apple had to do with anything, and they sure as hell wouldn't get why anyone would actually -pay- for water :P

Pff, 2014 and these guys are trying to run off like this is new tech? 1989, Nintendo Power Glove. If they haven't been able to improve or perfect it since then, somebody needs to be fired.

It's like the tablet PCs. Microsoft created them in 2001, and it was a failure. 5-6 years later Apple does the same **** and everybody loves it. ^^

Why wait for Q4 to release a controller, even if said controller's complexity cannot be grasped by our simple minds... bet you 9/10 it'll be overpriced too; developers believing this monstrosity is god's gift to PC gamers...

i have to admit that a joystick + mouse configuration looks appealing! ^^
i do sometimes regret to have no walking speed control in the WASD config (SHIFT for runing but still its only binary, you all know what i mean ^^")

I like what they are trying to do. Yet, it would be just a device for gaming and it can never replace the functionality of a keyboard. Even if I use it in gaming, it is like holding two mouses which is very weird. The concept of controlling that device is really interesting, but one of the advantages of a keyboard is the wide range of it that I can use it comfortably, so until they show me something that really catch my attention, I am going to stick to my keyboard.

agreed, we switch to many different applications on a workstation to take time changing controller to M+KB configurations.
that is why controllers are going so nice with the consoles when you want only the bare minimum to just play a game ^^

seems les functional than a keyboard it terms of key layout. plus I don't see the point in it. it's gonna feel like holding a mouse in each hand and I tried that; it's insanley awkward
