King In More Trouble As Indie Dev Says His Game Was Cloned By Candy Crush Publisher

In case you weren’t irritated enough by Candy Crush Saga publishers King after plaguing you with notifications on Facebook, chances are you probably weren’t impressed by them threatening The Banner Saga with legal actions over their - completely legitimate - use of the word “saga” in the game title.

But apparently when they’re not busy trademarking common and ancient English words as their own, King spend their time stealing and cloning games from indie developers. At least, that’s according to developer Stolen Goose, who claim King cloned one of their titles back in 2010 after a deal between the two companies fell through…

According to a blog post from Stolen Goose team member Matthew Cox - who pasted emails between himself and King to back up his allegations, the two companies were in talks over whether King would publish Scamperghost, a Pac-Man inspired game with the wall barriers from Pac-Man removed. After the developer got a better offer from elsewhere, King approached another developer and allegedly asked them to clone the game as fast as possible; quickly coming out with Pac-Avoid. You can check out comparison images between the two titles below.

It could be difficult to have a strong case here, since the game is a clear and obvious tribute to Pac-Man, but Stolen Goose allege that the idea of a similar game with no walls was invented by them for Scamperghost. But in case of allegations of “coincidence”, Stolen Goose actually tracked down the developers behind Pac-Avoid, who claim King lied to them about the nature of their relationship with Stolen Goose, and asked them to clone the game as quickly as possible, even trying to beat the original title’s release date.

Whilst all this comes to light, The Banner Saga creative team are claiming that they are unable to develop a sequel to their recent game until claims over their use of the term “Saga” (ironically, over claims that it is “too similar” to King’s entirely unrelated “Saga” series of games). King Games might find it tricky to come out of this one smelling of roses.

What do you think of King’s recent legal troubles? A contender for hypocrite of the year?

facepalm Please, PLEASE let King lose. Seriously, trying to sue people for using a generic word is stupid. I heard they were trying this with the word "Candy" but, idk. Either way they're greedy idiots (Candy Crush Saga is a fine example of that.)

It doesn't even make sense, sagas are stories about ancient Scandinavian and Germanic history, about early Viking voyages, and the The Banner Saga is about f*ing Vikings, and the Candy Crush Saga is not , how can they be so dumb.
