Rumours have been rife for a number of months now, but Samsung has finally taken the covers off the latest edition of its best-selling Galaxy series of mobiles.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has been unveiled and it is now just six weeks away from a global launch. Packing a 5.1-inch full HD Super AMOLED display, a 2.5GHz Snapdragon processor and a 16-megapixel camera, this looks like one smartphone not to be trifled with…

First up, that camera. The impressive 16-megapixel camera is capable of filming in full-HD at 3840 x 2160 resolution, with real-time HDR that helps to reproduce a greater range of luminosity. While the 0.3 second focus and specs might not be quite up to scratch for those serious about photography, the Galaxy S5 is still packing quite a punch in this field.

Following in the footsteps of the iPhone fingerprint sensor, the Galaxy S5 also introduces the feature. This allows the user to securely lock their phone to completely block access, or alternatively a private mode that protects certain content from prying eyes. This is all sounding like a secret agent’s dream come true. It can also be used for secure Paypal logins, ensuring regretful drunken shopping is now easier than ever.

A new Ultra Power Saving Mode is being integrated, funnily enough turning the display entirely into black and white, as well as shutting down all unnecessary features to minimise battery consumption. This seems so simple it’s a wonder no one has done it before. No word on if a free copy of Snake is included though.

Size-wise the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone measures 142 x 72.5 x 8.1mm, weighing in at 145g. In terms of durability the S5 is receiving a boost over its predecessor the S4, including both water and dust-resistant technologies that should give it a longer lifespan.

Samsung’s Simon Stanford said "We've decided to go back to basics with the Galaxy S5 and focus on the features and things that matter the most to our customers - namely the camera, ability to view and download data and content quickly and their health and wellbeing.

"People want a smartphone that enhances and enables their mobile life. The Galaxy S5 represents just that, and we're excited to see the response to our latest flagship smartphone device."
