Thief Smashes Deadly Shadows Sales After Topping UK Chart

Thief may have garnered more mixed reviews than you can shake a blackjack at, but that hasn’t stopped it from storming the charts in good old Blighty.

During its first week on sale in the UK it’s managed to top the charts, overhauling the mighty FIFA 14 and becoming the UK’s second best-selling number 1 so far this year. In fact, in the words of UKIE GfK Chart-Track, it has “smashed” the week one numbers attained by its predecessor Thief: Deadly Shadows back in 2004….

The traditionally PC-oriented franchise saw PS4 and Xbox One sales accounting for 75% of its total, no doubt helped by its almost perfect timing, smack bang in the middle of the dreaded post-launch drought. Thief has traditionally been quite a niche product, but the reboot seems to have bucked the trend in finding commercial success, during its first week at least.

Thief had some competition for the top spot too, with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 and Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare also hitting store shelves last week. While PvZ:GW gained a fairly impressive fourth spot in the charts, Lords of Shadow 2 staggered in at a disappointing 10. This is down on the original’s first week, so this could be a bad showing for the already-struggling Konami.

Have any of you GDers picked up Thief?

What do you think of it? Is it as bad as some people are keen on making out?

I pre-ordered it on steam and It's one of the best stealth game i've played but I prefer Dishonored because thief combat system is ****ed up.

Same as tzzsmk's comment. Even killing requires certain amount of stealth.

Thoose loading areas are realy annoing me. Besides, that map is not so open as I thought and is very hard to get from one place to another.

i agree, it's like the game was made to run on ramdisk... sometimes the game freezes for 10 sec mid-action

those freezes happen when "the game starts wrong" somehow, I still haven't located the exact problem, but when I have lags, it starts in the menu already (often if I skip initial video too quickly) and then in game as well, once when I checked back in Windows I had 15GB ram usage so I really don't know -_-

i've also suspected that i ran out of ram but that's not the problem for me, i've checked task manager and the game uses around 1.6-1.7 gb of ram.. and i have like 1.2-1.3 gb of ram available, the menu is smooth for me but the loading screens are surprisingly fast for me, maybe because many files load during the gameplay

I was thinking about that and it may be possible, but I have OS on one drive and game on second drive, so shouldn't matter...

hi guys, i'm kinda late but the solution seems to be installing Thief on SSD driver. Actually, i boot my OS from SSD and i play my games installed on the HDD! (obviously, i get better performance if the games are installed on the SSD). This works for me and now i can play Thief very smooth!

And it somehow feels less open than Thief 1 and 2 how is that even possible. Maybe its that huge marker that tells where to go.
