The world (should that be universe?) of Homeworld is a convoluted one. For a while the classic franchise was adrift in space, until Hardware: Shipbreakers puts its thrusters on and drifted into view. A spiritual successor to Homeworld, Hardware: Shipbreakers quickly became Homeworld: Shipbreakers, a proper successor.
Homeworld HD was also announced, containing HD remakes of Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2. Confusingly, this has now also been renamed, with developer Gearbox Software now christening the space sim rebirth the Homeworld Remastered Collection…
Basically, there’s a ton of Homeworld coming, and all of it should be looking shiny and new, given that contemporary spit and polish we've come to love from the HD remakes. Gearbox’s marketing manager Chris Faylor said in a blog post that "Previously, we'd been referring to this effort as Homeworld HD but as work progressed it became clear that title didn't properly communicate the scope of the work." So, they’ve embiggened their scope by called it Remastered. Hey, it worked for Lion King 3D so why shouldn’t it work for Homeworld.
"This is more than a simple re-release or up-res - given the input we've received from fans, mod makers and series veterans, the result is full-fledged remastering of nearly all aspects alongside the archival Classic versions," Faylor continued.
The Homeworld Remastered Collection will come packing both of the critically acclaimed space strategy classics, remasterfied in turbo HD and eye-exploding 4K, higher-res textures and remastered sound for the the audiophile contingent.
No release date as of yet, but we’d expect it come into Earth’s orbit sometime later this year.
Will you be picking up the remastered Homeworld?
