I don’t know about you but I spent a good chunk of my childhood wandering around the RuptureFarms meat processing factory, freeing/farting on enslaved Mudokons. I felt like Oddworld Inhabitants bizarre Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee was trying to teach me a life lesson with its excruciatingly steep learning curve and need for perfection - that emancipation was impossible.
I’ve gone back to play it since with a fully formed brain and it’s still nigh-on impossible, but what a game it is. Abe’s back now, in a remade version of Abe’s Oddysee, New ‘n’ Tasty!, and a new gameplay trailer from GDC gives us an extensive look at it…
Despite an almost total lack of story, or even talking for that matter, Abe’s Oddysee somehow managed to have one of the most fully formed worlds in gaming. It was oppressive and at times disgusting, while being simultaneously hilarious and heartwarming in its own sewn-up-eyeballs kind of way.
Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee New ‘n’ Tasty comes packing a host of improvements to the classic 2D platformer, including much enhanced visuals, sound design and what has been termed refined gameplay. The original relied on screen-based puzzles, whereas New ‘n’ Tasty introduces fully-scrolling levels, so it’s unclear how the original game translates over.
"You’ll see the dynamic cameras, the epic full-screen visual effects, Scrabs and Paramites, all trying to ruin Abe’s day," said Just Add Water CEO Stewart Gilray. "You’ll hear a new rhythm-filled rendition of an old classic from the original soundtrack, along with the new sound design."
Oddworld New 'n' Tasty is expected to arrive in the next few months for PC, PS3 and PS4.
