Earlier this week we brought you news that Galactic Civilizations 3 was entering Early Alpha for the hefty price of 100USD. Now the game is in Early Access, we can reveal the official preliminary system requirements for the Alpha build of the game.

We expected that GalCiv 3 would be on the demanding side, so these alpha specs are not a shock to us. Of course, the game doesn't get a full release until 2015, so we would expect a fair few changes to the recommended requirements before then, but they nonetheless give us an early indicator, and will be useful for anyone wanting to participate in the Alpha...

Galactic Civilizations III Alpha Minimum System Requirements

OS: Windows 7 64-bit

CPU: Quad Core CPU

HD: 3 GB

GPU: 512 MB DirectX 10.1 Video Card (AMD Radeon HD5000 Series / Nvidia GeForce 500 Series)

DX: 10.00

Galactic Civilizations III Alpha Recommended System Requirements

OS: Windows 7/ 8 64-bit

CPU: Intel Core i5 Processor or Equivalent

HD: 5 GB

GPU: 1 GB DirectX 10.1 Video Card

The Alpha as it stands is fairly rudimentary, with only a handful of the final options, setting and soundtracks currently in the game. With that in mind, the requirement we're expecting to change most as the game develops is the required hard drive space. With games routinely coming in around 20GB or more, we wouldn't be surprised to see that minimum 3GB figure quadruple before the game's final release.

If you want to dive into the Alpha early you'll need a quad-core CPU and 4GB RAM. GPU wise, you should be able to play the game on minimum without busting out the big guns; a HD5000 series AMD card or a GeForce 500 series card.

One of the big factors to look out for in this game is the fact that it is designed exclusively for 64-bit PCs. It's looking likely that fewer and fewer games will start to support 32-bit machines over the next few years as 64-bit becomes the norm. You will also need Windows 7 minimum, so if you're still running a legacy OS on your machine you'll need to upgrade if Galactic Civilizations floats your boat.

How do you think the requirements will change before the full release of Galactic Civilizations III? Will they be this demanding?

I'm not shocked. I'd recommend eight gigs of RAM, considering how much the game renders at once. The ship models are beautiful, and AI thinks a lot. They might go down, but to play the game as epicly big as you should? The specs are spot on
