The Division developer Massive Entertainment has enlisted the help of an entire development studio solely to help create the weaponry for its ambitious co-op open-world shooter.
If you were going to ask anyone to help you create enough digital weapons tech to start a binary war, it would surely be the gun enthusiasts at Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six developer Red Storm…
The Division is obviously a pretty big project, and Massive has had its hand forced in the matter, as development on the stunning-looking Snowdrop Engine powering the game continues apace. To help ease the load the veteran developers at Red Storm have parasailed in off a Sikorsky UH-60 to start creating what looks to be an enviable digital arsenal.
“They knew that surely we must have a team here that knows what we’re doing on that front,” says Red Storm Producer Tony Sturtzel. “They were right and our weapons team was available.”
In fact, it’s come to light that Red Storm has an entire team focused exclusively on weapons design. “I, personally, have been doing it for about six years now,” says Lead Weapons Designer JD Cragg. “One of the guys on my team has been doing it for almost nine. This is pretty much all I do – authentic military weapons, vehicles and that sort of thing.”
Cragg claims that the team at Red Storm have access to the most extensive collection of weaponry in the world, with terabytes of data housing tens of thousands of accurate photos of gun. He boldly says that The Division will have “the most accurate weapons of any videogame.”
The Division is an open-world co-op shooter taking in place in New York City after a man made virus has decimated the populace. Those who've survived have formed a classified fighting unit known as The Division, tasked with preventing the collapse of society as we know it.
It’s expected to arrive later this year, for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
