Epic has teased a huge game announcement coming our way soon, poised to take advantage of the impressive looking new Unreal Engine 4.
We know already that Epic is working on the squad-based persistent sandbox that is Fortnite, but co-founder Tim Sweeney has claimed that a title is in the works with the wow-factor we haven't seen since the original Gears of War was unveiled...
Famously a graphics powerhouse, Epic has been unusually quiet for the debut of Unreal Engine 4, with Daylight developers Zombie Studios beating Epic to the punch with its UE4 debut. Never ones to be beaten though, Tim Sweeney said in a recent interview that a game is in development that is “going to push next generation graphics as you'd always expect Epic to do.”
"There's a lot [of games] on the way and a large number of them haven't been announced," Sweeney continued. “You'll see lots of triple-A stuff coming out over time."
So far more than 40 games have been announced that support the fledgling Unreal Engine 4, with even more to come thanks to Linux, Steam OS, PS4 and Xbox One support. Despite this, there has of course been a dramatic change in the industry over the last few years, with the rise of the indie scene and failing AAA blockbusters, which Sweeney was quick to point out.
"The industry's changing," Sweeney said. "This generation it seems like there are about a third of the number of triple-A titles in development across the industry as there was last time around - and each one seems to have about three times the budget of the previous generation. I think we're heading towards a future where triple-A is the minority."
Do you agree with Tim Sweeney that we’re heading to a future where AAA game development is no longer the behemoth it has been?
What do you hope Epic has got planned for its top-secret new next-gen project?
