Paradox Interactive and Paradox North have announced that Magicka: Wizard Wars will be entering a free open beta phase on May 27.

Currently a paid for Steam Early Access title, the action PvP title will be a free-to-play open beta with several paid-for tiers, ahead of a full release later this year…

Magicka pits two teams of four robe-loving wizards in a battle to the death. Combining the frantic action of multiplayer deathmatch with the intense strategy of MMO PvP. Magicka: Wizard Wars is a spellcasting extravaganza. Players will be able to combine magical elements at will, creating the possibility of hundreds of different spell combinations in conjunction with your fellow robe dwellers.

For those who spend far too much time watching Clint Eastwood flicks and don’t want the hassle of photoshopping a rabbit in a hat over his cigar-chomping mouth, Magicka: Wizard Wars also features a one v one duelling mode.

The open beta begins on May 27th for those interested, and Paradox has outlined the three starter packs that will be available to give you a leg up in Magicka’s cut-throat world. The Starter Wizard Pack can be yours for £9 and comes packing a green founders robe, founder staff, a forum avatar and a forum icon, while the £15 Founder Wizard Pack nets you a yellow founders robe, forum avatar, exclusive access to Dev’s Dungeon forum and a Steam key for Crusader Kings 2.

Last but not least, those who cough up a whopping £45 will be able to get their wizardly mitts on the IMPressive Founder Pack, with a red founders robe, an exclusive sword, you can name your own imp and also $20 of in-game currency. Oh and that Steam Key for Crusader Kings 2.

Any of you delving into the world of Magicka: Wizard Wars when it opens its doors to all on May 27th?
