The Ground Forces expansion has officially trundled into online dogfighting sim War Thunder, Gaijin Entertainment has announced.

The tank invasion into War Thunder is reportedly Gaijin’s first steps towards creating a full scale MMO world war, now allowing players to fight via land and air in pitched battles…

Our goal from the beginning with War Thunder was to create a game that allows players to safely experience the perils of a full scale world war. The rumble you hear in the distance, is the sound of many of our six million players launching their earth shaking attacks using heavily armored ground forces. Players who prefer aerial battles better keep one eye in the air and one eye on the ground because the Ground Forces Expansion has launched!”, said Anton Yudintsev, CEO of Gaijin Entertainment.

The War Thunder: Ground Forces expansion joins the F2P aerial combat sim War Thunder, allowing players to pip aeroplanes out of the sky with a well-placed tank shell. This relationship goes two ways though, so expect to meet your maker in repeated fashion after being systematically bombed by an irate flying psychopath.

There will be Soviet and German vehicles to kick things off, with other nations reportedly being added in future updates. Vehicles vary from light, medium, and heavy tanks, all the way up to artillery and, beautifully, anti-air guns.

Pilots haven’t been forgotten though, with Gaijin also adding 10 new aircraft with the expansion, including the powerful new US Navy bomber PBJ-1H.

War Thunder and its Ground Forces expansion are available right now for PC, while PlayStation 4 owners will be treated to the Ground Forces expansion ‘soon’.

Any GD’ers still playing War Thunder regularly?

Looking forward to hopping into an armoured beast?

This expansion just made War Thunder 10x better, especially when player controlled planes get released into tank battles so pilots and tankers can get together and battle. Then there is infantry that you can gun down with ur tank MG's :D

The tank games are broken to hell right now. MASSIVE balance issues, favouring the german side. There is a number of maps which are designed rather badly, there is one where right outside Russian spawn point you get spawn locked by germans who have 2 - 3 positions overlooking the road out of Russian spawn...

The fact that the number of players queuing for germans is always twice as high as the number of players queuing for russians should be proof enough of this :)

plus the rank 1 tank destroyer is overpowered to hell. sure, it's made for destroying tanks but being able to destroy EVERY tank in rank 1 in one hit? there are things that seriously need to be fixed.

Reality in WW2 was Germany had the more advance technology. So it is only naturally the tanks would be better no?

Not really, only their planes were better. They were about even in everything else. Granted near the end of the war they shifted their research over from planes to other stuff, so everyone else caught up. Some people say that if they kept researching planes, that they would've won.

Is this in first person or 3rd person? I can't stand 3rd person but I'll give the game a try if it is in 1st...

Depends by what you mean by 1st and 3rd person. You can use sights to drive as well as shoot but it does have third person, though in simulation battles (not sure about realistic) the 3rd person view is centred around the commander hatch.

So it is a mix of the two then...

Arcade and realistic allow third person. Simulator battles force aircraft cockpit view, and for tanks you're stuck in a view that looks as if the commander opened the hatch is looking out of it.

All those views are available in all difficulty settings however limiting yourself to these in game modes that allow third person is making it worse for yourself, sadly...

Played a few simulation battles, it's pretty good but is completely different to WOT so it can take some getting use to.
