When we saw Goat Simulator rocket onto the Steam bestseller list back in April, no doubt many of you thought that would be the highlight for novelty games in 2014. However, the combined forces of Steam Community members’ wit and the outlandish imaginations of game creators has banded together to bring a different kind of novelty simulation experience.
Rock Simulator 2014 is a game about, well, looking at rocks. And playing as a rock. And it’s currently creeping ever higher up the concept page of Steam Greenlight…
According to the developer’s page, Rock Simulator 2014 will let you look at lovely rocks all around the world in “dozens of hand designed BEAUTIFUL environments”. If you’re bored of just looking at rocks in a game instead of going on National Geographic, there’s also “mini games where you play as a rock, such as a rock tumbling down and hill and having you avoid obstacles”. The game is, at the time of writing, in the #9 spot on the Greenlight concept page, up sixty places in just two days.
It’s not exactly news that PC gamers have always had a - somewhat perverse - sense of humour. It’s pretty much the main reason Goat Simulator was not only made, but was actually successful. It’s the reason there’s a million and one internet memes covering basically any gaming phenomenon ever, and why Notch just released Cliffhorse. It’s also the reason pretty much every DotA 2 review on Steam reads “Ruined my life: 10/10”.
Whilst I am as much a fan of “hilarious” novelty games as the next gal, this rather brings to mind the expression “This is why we can’t have nice things”. I think I will stick to my pigeon dating simulator if that’s alright with you.
