Nintendo has once again posted massive losses for the past quarter despite the hugely successful launch of Mario Kart 8, which shifted an impressive 2.82 million copies during its first month on sale - coming in at nearly 50% attach rate.

The runaway success of Mario Kart 8 wasn’t enough to help the flailing Wii U though, with just 510,000 units sold worldwide during the three months from April -June, a period during which Nintendo endured a $97.2 million loss…

Anecdotal reports flooding out during June suggested that Mario Kart 8 was causing Wii U’s to race off store shelves but this no longer appears to be the case. Mario Kart is Nintendo’s second biggest series of all time, selling more 100 million units worldwide since Super Mario Kart, but even its usual saviour was unable to help this time.

The figures represent an 8.4% drop in net sales in comparison to the same quarter last year, not helped by sales of its 3DS handheld console slowing dramatically, itself only shifting 820,000 units.

The latest figures now put the Wii U’s lifetime sales on 6.68 million units, some way behind the PlayStation 4’s 7 million already, and drastically down on lifetime Wii sales of 101.15 million.

There is still hope later this year and leading into 2015 though, with Super Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, The Legend of Zelda HD, Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Yoshi’s Wooly World, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker leading an all-star line-up of titles.

Is there any saving the Wii U at this point? Does the 50% attach rate for Mario Kart 8 and low Wii U sales mean that all core Nintendo gamers have already snapped up its latest console? Let us know!

Do a goggle search on the number of Sony losses the company is taking. Research how many divisions have simply closed down. It matters not that the PS4 is top dog in the 8th generation console market. The fact that Sony is doing massive, I mean massive restructuring speaks volumes about the state of there business...

All it means is that people are way too stuck in their ways, and way to stuck on the crap the Wii tried to actually try the Wii-U. I have one, and love it to death. It's 100% backward compatible, giving access to a far larger library than either of the other consoles, and it's price point is respectable. All people seem to see are the gimmicks Nintendo was trying for, and they completely overlook the awesomeness hidden there.

Maybe they should release pokemon on wii u just a suggestion cause with wii u's hardware we could have an impressive open world.

That's actually a fairly awesome idea. Imagine a fully developed, open-world Pokemon game, allowing you to go anywhere/do anything, and experience Pokemon in a way that hasn't been seen before. It could even be cross-platform in terms of trading/battling/etc... with 3DS systems, via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or possibly the NFC (Near-Field Communication) that the Wii-U has by default (an adapter for the 3DS is already on the way). Would bring Pokemon to those of us without handhelds.

If 2015 isn't a good year for Nintendo then they REALLY need to do something for their next console they put out. Nothing too innovative, as that is what has caused problems in the past. Give the masses what they want, old-school Nintendo! I no longer play Nintendo games but I really hope they don't go under. I want to be able to play Mario Kart 11 with my future kids in the near future one day! Not Call of Duty 16 or Halo 8...

Man, video games were never a cheap product to create, sell or buy but, boy, is it a pain to get a mustached plumber to ride a kart profitably nowadays.

i think that with all these great games coming the wii u will sell a lot , but will not surpass the other consoles.

if they stop making games exclusive and make it multi platform instead, they would get a lot profit

LOL I just read an article that had the exact opposite results showing the Wii U is up some 200% since Mario Kart8. Wow, Neil, where are you doing your research mate? You finding this info on a bathroom wall or something? lol

200% doesn't mean anything without the figures. A 200% increase suggests 255,000 were sold in the three months prior to Mario Kart 8's release, and doubling this still doesn't put the Wii U anywhere near a sales success? For reference the PS4 has averaged 180,000 sold per week since launch.

Jon, actually all these numbers that get tossed around the net really do not tell the real picture anyways. At the end of the day almost 7 million living rooms have a Wii U console sitting in it. That is not a failure by any means. There are about 8 million PS4's sitting in living rooms and around 4 million XB1's. All are a success imo...

But what gets under my skin is the tone of the articles against the Wii U. It is always writing with a negative light and give the false impression that the Wii u was a disaster. The Wii U might not be the crown jewel as the orginal Wii was, but neither is the PS4 or the Xbox...

I don't see how it's anything but terrible? I've got one myself since launch and I love it, but 7 million sold in 20 months isn't great is it? That's the reason it's got practically no third-party support and no shelf space in stores, people aren't buying it quick enough for stores to waste their time on it.

Don't get me wrong I think it's still worth buying one, and it's got the best lineup of the three so far, but from Nintendo's perspective I doubt it's doing them any good. Most of their income is going to come from software, and Mario Kart Wii shifted 36 million units, so MK8 has its work cut out.

It's treading water right now and if Smash Bros can't save it then it's time to start looking at a new console surely, before they get left behind.

Why does the extra year to reach 7 million matter really? Math is math, the time frame to me at least matters not. Nintendo released there console a year before Sony and MS. That is an advantage not a liability.

This is pretty much Nintendo. As I said a while back, they should start listening to people, their fans, specialists, instead of doing.. weird.. things that never help them. Mario Kart is, at least, something they are still doing in a good way.

It's not just Nintendo, Sony are doing much worse in terms of financial loss. iirc they lost a bit over 1billion last financial year, and expect it to continue in the next year or so.

I've been pointing this out several times already. Sony is in real trouble! No company can take billion dollar losses and survive...

Take a look at GM, the car company. They have lost over 50 billion since 2005 and are still kicking strong!
