Blizzard has declared that it doesn’t expected the World of Warcraft subscriptions to grow again following the drop-off over the past few months. More than 800,000 players have upped and left World of Warcraft within the last 3 months alone, but Blizzard has admitted it isn’t guaranteed these players will be back again.
The new Warlords of Draenor expansion is arriving later this year, and Blizzard is hoping that the subscriber numbers spike once more with its arrival, with the new content raising the level cap to 100 and offering a whole host of new content in the Orcish lands.
“We really don’t know if it will grow again,” said lead game designer Tom Chilton. “It is possible, but I wouldn’t say it’s something that we expect. Our goal is to make the most compelling content we can.”
It’s a frank admission from Chilton, who goes on to explain that with every expansion that gets released, another barrier is put up for new or returning players to overcome before getting involved. To help with this Blizzard has added the option to jump straight to level 90 so they can get right to the new content added in the Warlords of Draenor expansion. Do you think World of Warcraft has had its day, or will new players flood in with the Warlords of Draenor expansion? Are the current long-term subscribers there for good, or do you expect subscriber numbers to keep dropping? Let us know!
