Nintendo has released new footage of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, revealing that Toadette will also be a playable character. The new Japanese trailer also shows a stack of new levels and gameplay functions in the release, which is already looking toadily awesome.
The 3D puzzle adventure will mark Toad’s grand debut into the Super Mario world as the lead man. Up until now he’s been confined to guest appearances in other Mario games, most often in the Mario Kart series. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a spin-off from the mini games originally featured in 2013’s Super Mario 3D World, a fan favourite that Nintendo obviously thinks has enough potential to be successfully expanded into a full game.
The pressure to be a success won’t just be resting on Toad’s shoulders though, as Toadette will be splitting the screen time with the little hero. The trailer gives us a quick view of Toadette being kidnapped by a giant bird, much to Toad’s dismay. This could suggest one of the main plot strands of the game could be to help reunite the two characters.
Toad and Toadette look to be the only playable characters in Captain Toad but will be backed up by other members of the Toad Brigade, with Blue, Yellow and Green Toad all offering their support. It looks like there’ll be at least 70 levels on the game and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will employ the use of the Wii U touchscreen in some imaginative ways - it doesn't look like there's mushroom for Nintendo to cram any more into this package.
You’ll be able to join Toad and Toadette on their adventure on January 9th next year if you’re in Europe, or towards the end of 2014 in America and Japan. The game will be available as a disc copy and a digital download for the Wii U. Are you looking forward to the Toad and Toadette's moment in the spotlight or should they stick to the supporting cast in Mario’s world?
