Elite Dangerous is something of a milestone in gaming and will be officially launched on December 16th. It forefather, Elite, was a true gaming classic allowing the gamer to explore a universe, trade and fight space pirates. Elite Dangerous is David Braben's (he is one of the original guys behind Elite and CEO of Frontier Development) crowdfunded next foray into the Elite universe.

One of the defining points behind Elite Dangerous's crowd funded campaign was that Elite DAngerous, while being online would also offer a single player offline experience. But with only a month to go until release it seems like it is not going to be possible for Braben to include the offline element of Elite Dangerous.

This may upset a few gaming investors, who looked to the new space title for solo, offline gameplay only.

"Going forwards, being online lets us constantly both curate and evolve the galaxy, with stories unfolding according to the actions of commanders," Braben explained "Exploration is also a key factor, too, and it is important that what a single player explores matches what other players explore, whether single or multiplayer – a complex, coherent world – something we have achieved." So it sounds like the single player and multiplayer experiences need to match up based on their core Elite Dangerous game architecture.

He goes on to say, "Galaxy, story, missions, have to match, and it does mean the single player has to connect to the server from time to time, but this has the added advantage that everyone can participate in the activities that can happen in the galaxy. A fully offline experience would be unacceptably limited and static compared to the dynamic, ever unfolding experience we are delivering."

To sweeten the news a little we are told that there will be thirty playable ships instead of twenty five and they are working hard to encourage the character to need/want to leave their pilot seats and explore the worlds and spacestations. We have certainly heard early reports that Elite Dangerous might still be a little light on content due to the huge scope of the title. But on checking out the starship fight mechanics this is certainly shaping up to offer some epic sci-fi nostalgia to some aging gamers. We are watching this one with interest.

We have also been looking into Star Citizen and have been over to their studios, so check out that as well if space exploration sandbox games are what you like to get in on.

Some friends of mine are really into this game... even with the TrackIR and voice commands and such. Cool looking game but I probably won't ever get into it.

The hazards of Kickstarter is that every design process will change through creation. We need to accept that. People are holding the game accountable for a feature that was promised but was ultimately flawed. They have created a complex galaxy to explore. Solo is still an option. I urge you to enjoy it! It is fantastic

I don't mind the online only, it's not got the monthly subscription policy so I'm still happy :)

Well seeing as how this is an MMO I would have assumed it would be online only... I don't feel like wasting any more money on MMO's. I spent 1k on star citizen so I'll see how that goes.
