While the US public gets to enjoy the highly anticipated next game in the Dragon Age series, and the rest of the world is on the edge of their seats with the game pre-installed, EA announces it withdraws the title from one of the worlds biggest gaming software markets - India!

According to a EA representative:

"In order to avoid a breach of local content laws, EA has withdrawn Dragon Age: Inquisition from sale in India"

It goes on to explain that Dragon Age Inquisition will no longer be available for pre-order in India. Any Indian customers that pre-ordered DA:I will get their money back in full.

According to unconfirmed sources, this excludes the countries Pakistan and Bangladesh. A highly controversial move from EA, dont you think? Dragon Age Inquisition is a little risky, when it comes to some of the sexual content included in the narrative. EA denies the allegation that this withdrawal measure is being taken due to the possibility for in-game gay romances and love options throughout the story. Including gay sex scenes.

"The decision here is in relation to local obscenity laws, but not specific to same gender romance."

Although this is a little light on the ground at the moment, we expect more information on the matter to come to light. And so leaving much to the imagination when it comes to a definition of what is considered "illegally obscene" in India. A point to consider, India's obscenity laws seem to have no problem whatsoever with GTA V, and its, at times, highly graphical sexual content. Then again, Fallout: New Vegas was never sold in India due to a precautionary measure by Bethesda who didn't want to offend the country with how Brahmin, the two-headed post-apocalyptic evolutionary successors to the modern day cows, were depicted in the game.

Lawyers familiar with local legislation would probably have an easier job getting to the bottom of this subject. Nevertheless we know that gay rights in India are known to be a topic of contention. A law, allowing the criminalization of homosexual acts, previously put to end in 2009, was reinstated last year.

In any case, sale of digital and physical copies are supposedly suspended in the country, on all platforms.

Another example why I'm not against torrent sites (NOTE: I don't torrent games); circumvention of censorship/bans/self-censorship... Hey EA, guess which country your games is going to get "illegally" downloaded most...?

No Gill3002g is right... Those above options are not likely in India... Indians who want this game will have no choice to torrent it...

Good move. Keep homosexual, heterosexual and all other sexual immorality out of our games. Simple.

well... since YOU are comparing an immoral sexual act to mass murder and drug use, it seem to me that YOU acknowledge that all forms of sexual immorality TOGETHER with mass murder are OBJECTIVELY EVIL, regardless .of your beliefs

That being the case, what are you complaining about again?

My complaint was about people being okay with mass murder, firearms and drug use in games, even cop killing and bank robbery... But a little too much skin; over-sensitive idiots start losing their minds...

Dude, being okay with mass murder has nothing to do with whether sexual immorality is right or wrong. An act is judged objectively on its own standard and not compared to others. If it's wrong, it's wrong. Period. If your moral justification of accepting such acts in games is because mass murder is being accepted then you better give your moral grounds another look... because you have both feet planted in mid air. Firmly.

Say what you want, I'm happy they've done this. I'd rather them bite the bullet on income than remove content from a game just because a single government want to be offended.
EA, thank you for not removing content for the rest of us because of them. :)

I imagine it has something to do with the Indian Penal code and in particular section 377. Which was ruled to be "unconstitutional" in 2009 but has since been overturned (as of 2013). The Mass Effect trilogy and previous DA games were released prior to 2013. Info on section 377 can be found here. BTW i'm not Indian or an expert on this at all. I literally just looked it up :P

Its a very disappointed move by EA. I myself work in gaming store & I can see the frustration on people's face by this decision . They(EA) already stopped releasing physical copy in India. They say that Indian market is not for Game publisher. because they want to sell all their games at 3500 INR. Other Publisher sell their game at 999/1499/1799 for Pc & I think its cheaper than any other country

The cause for this is not EA douchebaggery... They're just being careful... The problem with our damn country is that our people are still too immature to tolerate stuff like this... Imagine members of some right wing outfit stoning or burning down stores they think are selling these... Any small group in this country can claim their "religious sentiments" (whatever the hell that means) were offended and hold all of our society hostage... I don't see the Indian general populace growing the f@ck up anytime soon...

I think its a crime being an Indian gamer like me..first of all we dont get all originals CDs here,we have to buy pirated copies with no gurantee of working.Secondly nvidia releases their gfx price 40% higher than rest of world in India, and Third if Biggies like EA do this,my rig can only be used for editing, not gaming

I'm sorry, but you don't "have" to buy pirated copies. That's just silly. It's unfortunate that laws and trading standards in India don't quite reflect the rest of the world. India is one of the biggest growing economies in the world and it's just a shame to see products etc banned or just not released for what ever reason.

There are absolutely NO stores selling original games in India ( Atleast in my city ). The hardware pricing comment is also quite true. Internet speeds and connectivity is abysmal here, so steam is out of the question here as well. The maximum speeds available are 8 mbps and there are always bandwidth caps, after which the speed slows down to 1/10 of the original speed.

Bandwidth caps are absurd in my eyes. I wish i could get 8mb/s. I get about 4.5mb/s so i understand on that part.
