UPDATE: POLL LIVE

We’ve been spoiled when it comes to action adventures during the past 12 months, but this pair are surely the cream of the crop. From Software can basically do no wrong at the moment, so it was little surprise when Dark Souls 2 came along and swept everyone off their feet, delivering the same punishing gameplay that made its predecessor such a success, but on a scale never before seen. Dark Souls 2 was a massive, incredibly deep sequel that expanded on well-known systems of the series, adding in some of the most incredible boss encounters we’ve ever seen.

In terms of gaming surprises though, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor was the polar opposite. Announced late last year, expectations weren’t exactly sky-high for Monolith’s open-world romp, particularly after the mediocrity of Guardians of Middle-Earth. What arrived was an absolutely stellar lesson in how to deliver next-generation mechanics in a truly dynamic open world, borrowing heavily from other systems and iterating, improving.

Now these two gaming greats must battle to the death though, and only one may survive. Will it be the Uruk Hai-filled wastes of Middle-Earth or the misery of Drangelic that wins through in the end? It’s up to you to decide in our 12 Games of Christmas knockout contest, so get voting below!

Yesterday's winner was Assassin's Creed Unity, just about receiving more votes in the poll than Watch Dogs and delivering the knockout blow. So, the winner of today's bout will square off against Assassin's Creed Unity in the next round. Who wins in this battle to the death? You decide!

12 Games of Christmas Rules

In celebration of all things festive, we thought there was no better way to salute some of 2014's biggest games than a good old-fashioned punch-up. A battle to the death if you will. 12 of this year's most memorable titles will be going head to head in a series of knockout rounds over the next 9 days, and there can be only one winner.

To make things a little spicier we'll also be giving away a copy of the winning game on December 24th, perfect for a spot of gaming in the holidays. All you have to do to win a copy of that game is tweet your support for any game in the 12 Games of Christmas, using the links provided in each article, and we'll pick a winner out of all of the tweets after the final bout. Multiple tweets for different games will count as additional entries to the competition. Tweeting is separate from the poll and does not count as a vote in the 12 Games of Christmas.

How the community voting works

Each day at 18:00 GMT two titles will battle each other. Whichever title receives the most votes in the poll wins, and will then go through to the next round. 12 games in total will be battling away, and the first six rounds will take place from today and over the next five days - one battle per day. The six games that win will make it through to the semi-finals, where three further 1v1 fights will take place. The winners of these three battles will then make it to the three-way final to decide the ultimate game this Christmas.

The winner of this knockout competition is Game Debate's favourite choice of game to be played this Christmas, doing its best Rocky impression and swatting aside the rest of the competition like flies.

Each bout will last 24 hours, and the winner is whichever game receives the most votes in the poll, which can be found towards the bottom of each article.

Tweet to be in with a chance to win a copy of the overall tournament winner on Christmas Eve.

Vote in our poll at the bottom to help determine this round's winner.

i5 will work excellent with the GTX 970.I'm not sure about 400W PSU however. That PSU (Cooler Master elite 400w) isn't really that good.It isn't even 80+ certified and it doesn't have enough amperage for the GTX 970.

this isn't even a competition... Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is faaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrr more awesome than Dark Souls 2. Dark Souls 2 contender will probably be Lords of the fallen, which imho is also faaaaaaaarrrrr more awesome than Dark Souls 2 :P

Shaddow of mordor gets my vote, although I love dark souls, SoM is probably my GOTY this year, and has instantly jumped into my top 10 fav games ever, making it the newest game on there since Dragon Age Origins (if I remember right) :-)

Shadow of Mordor wins this one. Dark Souls II wasn't as good as the original imo.
