Up For Debate - Which Web Browser Is Best

System Requirements Optimum 1080p PC Build Low vs Ultra Screenshots GPU Performance Chart CPU List That Meet System Requirements GPU List That Meet System Requirements

It's been creaking along for a good old while now but it's been a long time since Microsoft's Internet Explorer was a dominant force amongst web browsers. Internet Explorer does just what it says on the tin, but does it do it best? Did it ever do it best?

Probably the biggest names in web browsers now are Mozilla Firefox, another stalwart that's offered an innovative alternative to IE for a long old while, and Google Chrome (Who knows the web better than Google?). They don’t stand alone though, older favourites like Opera are still knocking about doing what Firefox and Chrome just can’t do for some surfers; I even recently saw somebody rocking a dusty-looking build of Netscape.

And what about Safari? Boo - I know, yes. But the browser has undeniable merits for many users. A less cluttered user interface, 'reader view' feature, lower energy demands at competitive speeds and many tiny tweaks that make for a smoother browsing experience. For instance - I've noticed that Safari logs me onto each site I visit automatically if I give it permission to start with. And I don’t mean it remembers my login details for me, I mean I type the URL in the search bar and press return, and the page loaded has me already logged in without clicking anything else.

Extensions are another important comparison point, and while most browsers have a range available now, the amount available between competing softwares still varies quite a bit (Safari is definitely still lacking in this department).

Which browser is king? Since popular new features are almost always quickly adopted by rivals, are there any important differences? Over to you!

Which Browser?

Guys guys stop arguing about which is better between Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari... Let us all just agree that IE is the fifth best among these...

I'll have to vote for Chrome on this. Chrome has a wide range of versions such as the chrome canary mentioned by tzz and also it my personal choice over Mozilla in Ubuntu because one thing: More Extensions and themes if I might add(customization skills). I also believe Chrome has a bigger and better support community but that's not totally relevant in this case.
As far as Internet Explorer is concerned I have used both 10 and 11 on my laptop and they are a massive improvement from Microsoft. They are very fast in everyday use and is lightweight. Extensions may (haven't had any problems tho) sometimes slow down chrome or Mozilla but IE is blazing fast especially in flash operations.
Safari.... hmmm the browser itself is very good but due it being widely available mostly on Apple products I think it is quite forgotten. It is also very good in its operation.
That is to say overall general use of almost all browsers is the same but some tweaks in the browser can make it stand out from the crowd.

I used Safari for Windows for a while just to try it out... Browsing normally, the speeds are good but download speeds just suck...

Too bad Apple dropped Windows support for Safari in 2012. Now its probably way faster with the newest versions and If it were still supported on Windows, I would probably be using it along with Chrome.

I personally use Chrome, but only because I got used to it after still using my Northwood P4 (without HT) until 2012 ;) (It was a bit faster than most others back then). I don't really care what browser I use apart from that.

IE 11 is actually the fastest of them all, despite lacking extensions.

Really? Thought I was being original :(

Also, can you backup that statement?
I've always known browsers to be like this:
Chrome = Fastest
IE = Most hated and slowest
Firefox = Most Secure

Not saying you're a liar, just want to see some proof :)

Have you even tried IE 11? I've tried all these browsers [except Safari] and IE 11 IS the fastest. Here:

That's not my experience. I'm currently comparing Firefox and IE in my system, and the latter is considerably faster when it comes to startup times and practically the same when it comes to loading pages.

thing I hate most about IE is the ridiculously high amount of R/W in Windows registry, although it got better with recent IE11 it's still ridiculous :P

I'm guessing you do dev work or something like that. What do you think of IE for that kind of thing? I hear it is quite bad on developers and web designers, but I'm not either so it makes no difference to me.

Also, pardon my ignorance but, what do you mean by R/W?

IE is among most used browsers, and so as web dev I need to check website appearance in this browser too, compared to other browsers it tends to be few steps late (talking about features) compared to Firefox and Chrome for ex.
by R/W I mean read/writes :)

IE: very slow browser till the ie10. really there is a big improvement, quite reliable I can say but with less features as other browsers.

MF: one of the best browsers for all kind of users, fast and reliable but also it can be fancy and posh. The only problem I find is if you leave it open for many hours it consumes more and more memory. meaning for less powerfull computers it gets laggy [..]

[..] Chrome: Same as Mozilla, but faster. Reliable also but more user friendly as its more simply.

Opera: I haven’t tested a lot but I liked the fact that was the first browser with fast tabs. I think in the right hands can be a useful browser (no problem with memory for long time use)

Safari: never used it no opinion sorry :P

I use both chrome and firefox and some times IE at work as some things work better there for professional things. Good thing about chrome is that is very light and fast I agree. but still needs some improvements in my opinion. Firefox on the other hand I use it when I use linux I found it even faster than chrome there. but both chrome and firefox I think are on the lead :)
