Beamdog has sensationally revealed that its secretive ‘Adventure Y’ project is in fact an all-new Baldur’s Gate adventure. The Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale Enhanced Editions developer has been beavering away on the as-yet-untitled 'Baldur's Gate 3' for some time now, with a release anticipated by the end of this year.
It’s big, big news for CRPG fans, although Beamdog’s title isn’t a Baldur’s Gate sequel per se, and is instead intended to bridge the gap between Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2. Set once more around the city of Baldur’s Gate, the party has been kidnapped and thrown in jail in Athkatla, although details of what happened during this time are scarce.
“This year, the eagerly anticipated Adventure Y will finally navigate the dark underground caverns of development and venture out into the Sword Coast,” wrote Beamdog's writer Amber Scott. “We’ve mentioned before that Adventure Y will be an addition to the Baldur’s Gate line using the Infinity engine, bridging the gap between Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition."
An official announcement regarding the new Baldur’s Gate’s title and release date is expected in Spring, with Scott saying Beamdog “have an exciting release planned for this game, something bigger than we’ve ever done before”, even taking the time to share a link to some blurry leaked screenshots.
Do you think the talented team at Beamdog be able to live up to the quality of the original titles? What do you reckon transpires between the first and second Baldur’s Gate titles?
