If you’re unfortunate enough to have been shopping on the Windows Game Store, you may have noticed turn-based roguelike Darkest Dungeon. Well, don’t buy it, the game’s developer has warned, it’s a scam version of the game weighing in at just a 2MB download.

Like most app stores, the Windows 8 store has pretty much become the gunslinging Wild West, littered with clones and dodgy downloads looking to make a quick buck from unsuspecting perusers. Darkest Dungeon developer Tyler Sigman took to Twitter to warn fans away from the illegally sold version of the game, explaining that only copies bought from Humble or Steam are guaranteed to be legitimate.

If you didn't buy Darkest Dungeon on Steam or Humble Store right now, you got scammed,” Sigman tweeted. “If anyone has a contact at Windows Game Store, please share. Somebody is scamming DD by selling it (illegally) on there.

At the time of writing Darkest Dungeon is still available on the Windows App Store, priced at just £2.59 in comparison to its £14.99 price on Steam. If the 2MB download wasn’t a big enough giveaway, then the broken English in the description helps shed a bit more light on the situation.

Microsoft’s store has become a bit of a haven for dodgy apps like this, with fake copies of Euro Truck Simulator 2, Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham and more cropping up. Should Microsoft be paying far closer attention to what gets onto its app store? Do you only pick up games from places you trust, or do you get tempted by sweet deals from shadier sites?

I do think Microsoft should manage the app store more closely. Like the arcade section on Xbox.
