Lionhead Studios has confirmed the upcoming PC and Xbox One title Fable Legends will be free-to-play. The four vs one asymmetric multiplayer RPG was originally announced as an Xbox One exclusive before Microsoft sensationally revealed in January it would be arriving on Windows 10 with cross-platform play.

It’s now been confirmed you won’t have to cough up the cash for a copy at all, with the devs drawing inspiration from the success of League of Legends and DOTA 2 in offering Fable Legends as a service. Lionhead has stressed the plan is to supplement the game with paid-for cosmetic content, rather the pay-to-win structure everybody automatically dreads.

The objective with Fable Legends post-launch is to continually provide more story-based content following launch, releasing as episodes every few months. Everybody will be able to play all of the content, but will be restricted to a stock of four heroes which will change every two weeks. If you want permanent access to a specific character, you can pay to unlock them. This can be done as a microtransaction or using in-game money you’ve earned. The same applies to the villain characters.

There will also be a glut cosmetics available to purchase as well, should you feel the need to deck your character out in some neat-looking gear.

It’s clear to see now why Microsoft and Lionhead chose to incorporate PC now, with studio head John Needham admitting F2P games rely on large-scale player bases to be a success, which wouldn’t necessarily be found on the Xbox One alone.

Fable Legends is tentatively scheduled for a 2015 launch, although we're likely to see an extensive beta crop up before then. Is Fable Legends' move to F2P a good or bad move for you?

Wow. I already knew Fable Legends wasn't gonna be anywhere close to Lionhead's last Fable's but free to play? Inspiration for DOTA and Leauge? Is this a f**kin MOBA? ... Lionhead is commiting suicide in my eyes.

I think the large ammount of hate can be attributed to the mobile game market and other free to play games, people got burned by Dungeon Keeper on Android, and by EA in general.

I agree that the stigma surrounding "F2P" needs to go away.

I'd rather buy the game than pay a yearly subscription to run the OS it's going to run on....... in other words, no thanks Microsoft.

I think microsoft just wants us to get windows 10, and use the new xbox app. so they can make money of that app in the feature. and because its free on pc it "must" also be for free on the xbox

I can't stand free 2 play. But since it's Fable, I will give them a chance to change my mind.

It's a safe bet that there will be micro transactions or some kind of dlc that the game would be bad without (Cough cough Civ 5)

Possibly they want to catch you coming and going, but the trick is, M$ will be using this and similar ploys to lure gamers into switching to Windows 10 and getting them to pay a yearly subscription.

Well, no harm in trying it out then. If it's worth the money, we'll cough it up
