Ubisoft has announced Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China is just the first part of a planned three-part standalone series arriving this year. Adventures set in India and Russia make up the final two parts, with AC Chronicles: China kicking things off on 21st April, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Originally planned as part of the Assassin’s Creed Unity season pass, the Chronicles series will be a 2.5D side-scrolling action platformer with bite-sized globetrotting tales. The debut China episode will feature Shao Jun - a Ming Dynasty Assassin trained by series’ mainstay Ezio Auditore.

The second episode will be set in India, 1841, and will feature assassin Arbaaz Mir, who ardent fans may recognise cropped up in the Assassin’s Creed: Brahman graphic novel. The third and final episode will be set in Russia, 1918, post-revolution, starring Nikolai Orelov from a pair of Assassin’s Creed graphic novels - The Fall and The Chain.

Each episode will play similarly but will have unique visual styles, including contemporary Chinese ink and Sikh-influenced journalistic imagery. The switch to 2D has meant a number of gameplay changes, including vision cones for enemies and a greater focus on skill-based platforming. From first impressions it looks very much like the classic Prince of Persia games, and we wouldn't be surprised if the rumoured 2D Prince of Persia game last year ended up as this.

There is a narrative link” between the three games, says Xavier Penin, lead game designer at Ubisoft Partners. “As [the games] have to be independent, it’s not huge. It’s not central, but it’s there, especially for the fans. And if you finish Russia, and you’ve played the other two, there’s a special ending that’s really interesting for the fans and ties the Chronicles together.

China will be arriving in April, with the remaining two episodes, Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India and Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia, set to launch by Autumn 2015.

If the rumours are true and Assassin's Creed Victory hits later this year, as expected, we'll be getting five Assassin's Creed games on PC in 2015 alone. Will you be giving these standalone adventures a go?

I think they are going to leave the assassin's creed series the same way as they left the prince of persia series, by making 2d games.

they should make an assassin's creed game one set in the philippines during the spanish reign that lasted 333 years.. yes 333... and most of the templars i see are Spaniards. so they can think of things that could've happened on those 333 yrs some i think were f*cked up though.... i think it would be pretty bad ass.. all the ideas i can imagine.. all the assassinations during those times!.

My answer to that FIVE AC games released this year is that it is nothing like FIVE titles per year! AC Rogue was already developed and was just ported to PC. Those three AC Chronicles games are merely something like the episodic Tyranny Of King Washington DLC and they are not even as complex. The only real AC game this year is AC Victory so there is no need to curse Ubisoft for so-called milking the series :D I like the idea of Chronicles since I find it as if Ubisoft is trying new locations in small games so they could build AAA titles on the fan favorite settings later.

As if enough Assassins Creed Games aren't released, more Assassins Creed Games are on the way. I have little to no interest in Assassins Creed Chronicles: China,Assassins Creed Chronicles: India,Assassins Creed Chronicles: Russia and Assassin's Creed Victory.

They've said a few weeks ago that they have plans for 10, maybe even 20 years, between the main installments, the spinoffs, mobile versions, movies... Then again they're not selling all that well compared to 5 years ago.
