GTA V is the perfect sandbox for the modding community. The engine is solid and the community imaginative. Obviously we have to dodge the Rockstar ban hammer, because modding is not authorised. But it doesn't have to scare you away from giving it a try, especially if you don't use the Grand Theft Auto Online side of the game.
It's simple enough. If you add a mod make sure you remove the files before you click the "Launch GTA V Online" button. But if, like me, you always click the regular "GTA V launch" button to play single player Story Mode, then Rockstar won't see your mods and you won't get banned/blocked from using your copy of GTA 5. Anyway, let's take a look at how to run this awesome Knight Rider inspired mod, so you can get yourself your own personal Knight Industries 2000 to follow you around like an obedient gun dog.
Getting Grand Theft Auto 5 Ready for KITT MOD
First up, make sure you have the full up to date copy of GTA V installed. When you load GTA V, you can see in the bottom right of the game menu page their is a version number. The latest version of GTA V, at time of writing, is 393.2
Visit the following two web pages and download and run the following. These need to be installed otherwise the mod simply won't work.
.Net Framework 4.5 (note that Windows suggests that you also download their latest Malicious Software Removal Tool. You do not need to tick to include that)
Visual C++ for 2013 (x64) (You will be presented with three file download options. Select vcredist_x64.exe and download and run just that file)
You may find that your PC already has some of these components installed. That's fine, it means you are already up to date.
Download the Knight Rider Mod
Then visit this page to download KITT for GTA V. Click the giant green button that says Download and you will get a zip folder that contains all the files you need to get the mod working when you next load GTA V and select Story Mode. There are a couple of things you need to do first to get that to happen.
Once you have unpacked your zip file to your desktop somewhere, select the files
Including the folder called scripts
and copy them into your GTA V game file folder, which will be in your Steam folder.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Grand Theft Auto V
If the scripts folder conflicts with something already then that is because you already have other mods installed. You can select to overwrite, which you can do if you are ok to lose your previous mod scripts. Otherwise open up the scripts folder and copy the KITT scripts across to your GTA V folder.
You will notice another folder called Optional in the KITT mod folder, ignore that. It offers another way of integrating the mod.
Run GTA 5 As Administrator To Get Knight Rider Mod To Work
You will also see in the Grand Theft Auto 5 game folder a couple of .exe files that are used to get the game running. These are called GTA5.exe and GTA5Launcher.exe - right click on each of these in turn and select Run As Administrator.
This may all sound complicated, but I assure you it's not. I will recap so you can hear just how easy it is.
- Download and run 2 tiny files from Microsoft, .Net Framework 4.5 & Visual C++ for 2013 (x64)
- Download the KITT mod and copy the mod files to GTA V folder
- Edit .exe files to run as Administrator
- Play GTA 5 Story Mode and press num pad + symbol to get the choice of which version of KITT you want to turn up
Driving KITT in GTA V And His Abilities
Press + on your num pad to bring up the Knight Rider car selection menu. Once you have selected which KITT you want, either 2000 or 3000, it will spawn on the map and head straight for you.
You can get KITT to self drive, head to way points, follow you while you head around the place on foot or in another vehicle. It has super pursuit mode and smoke screen. KITT even comes with a rocket launcher. The 3000 model has a minigun on the bonnet. My personal favourite is the fact that you can get KITT to drive on 2 wheels and then turn on self drive so you can cruise down the high-street on two wheels while just chilling.
KITT can also release an EMP that will temporarily incapacitate all nearby vehicles. And of course KITT is invincible, taking all the battering you can throw at it.
There have been a tonne of tweaks and audio added that will put a smile on your face. Like most mods, this one is still a work in progress but it is solid and fun right now as you can see from our videos of the Knight Rider KITT Mod.
The KITT MOD is turned on by default, but you can also disable it by pressing F10 if you wish. What mods have you tried and would highly recommend to your fellow GD gamers? Let us know and perhaps we could feature it here on GD with a bunch of GTA 5 mod gameplay videos.
