Games Workshop’s tabletop Warhammer fantasy game has been going through a tumultuous period as of late. An apocalyptic event has swept across Warhammer Fantasy Battle, ushering in the new Age of Sigmar. Amidst all this, Total War: Warhammer looks set to arrive as the ultimate send-off.
We’ve had a few teasers of Total War: Warhammer up until now, but The Creative Assembly has just blown the lid off its epic strategy game thanks to a 10-minute gameplay walkthrough. If you’re looking to get a glimpse of just how the Total War series handles a fantasy take, then look no further. Here we get a glimpse at various battle strategies for both the Empire and the rival Greenskin army.
Where Total War: Warhammer stands out from its predecessors is in just how different the opposing armies are. The orcs are unrecognisable from your archetypal Total War, with powerful shamans, brutish giants, and deadly flying units. We get a look at a number of late game units here, duking it out in the Battle of Black Fire Pass. This is just one environment of a huge landmass, which allows the dev team to get a bit creative.
At the moment it’s still early days. Total War: Warhammer isn’t likely to arrive for another year or so, and there’s clearly still plenty of work to be done on unit animations and combat. The basics are there though for a great entry point for a series typically targeted at history fans.
Total War: Warhammer is pencilled in for a 2016 launch. It’s the first of a planned trilogy of Warhammer Fantasy titles.
What do you think of it from this latest gameplay trailer then? after the muted reception to Total War: Attila, could this put the serie firmly back on track?
