Ubisoft has published a new gameplay demo of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, demonstrating a full assassination mission with Evie Fry. The eight-minute demo takes us through all the different approaches that can be taken for assignments, making use of Evie’s varied stealth-based toolset.
Evie has her own story, skill tree, and unique abilities, much of it focused on remaining out of sight. On the basis of this demo it adds some much needed subtlety to Assassin’s Creed’s usual brute force approach. Arriving via a boat on the Thames, Evie’s tasked with breaking into the Tower of London for this Black Box mission kill.
Black Box missions are like a few of the assassination missions which cropped up in Assassin’s Creed Unity. Players are given a number of methods to approach a kill, including unique kills, entry spots, and additional objectives. This was best utilised in the first assassination in Unity, for the Notre Dame kill, but it subsequently tailed off and became far more linear later in the game.
Perhaps the most promising thing from the offset is Evie’s bonus objective of killing less than five guards. As far as I’m aware, Assassin’s Creed has never rewarded us for not killing. This indicates a possible shift toward actual stealth, rather than the Terminator-esque killing machines previous assassins have been.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is out on October 23rd for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and tentatively scheduled for Q4 2015 on PC.
