What Are You Playing This Weekend - September 2015 Edition

Written by Jon Sutton on Fri, Aug 28, 2015 5:00 PM

It’s been a quiet August, but we haven’t been totally devoid of quality releases, with Shadowrun: Hong Kong, The Swindle and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture helping to stave off the dreaded summer drought. This weekend we roll into September though, and that can mean only one thing - the avalanche of top-tier games begins. Things are kicking off with a bang as well, with the goatknapping Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Mad Max to look forward to this coming Tuesday.

That’s just the starting pistol though; the last chunk of 2015 is crammed with ridiculously promising titles that’s going to make carefully planning your gaming purchases an absolute nightmare. The next few days are the last chance to clear the decks. To polish off those titles which have been lingering in your library for months, waiting to be completed. I’m looking at you, Geralt, you 200-hour monster.

Jon: I’m basically going on an internet blackout this weekend, to avoid any and everything Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It’s probably one of, if not the favourite series of mine, so the wait until Tuesday is painful to say the least. Or not, as the case may be. I’ve seen plenty of people have managed to get console copies already, the little mites.

To bide my time I’ll be diving head-first into Until Dawn this weekend. The postman’s got it right now, and it looks to tick all my slasher-horror boxes. It’s got a branching story with what the devs claim is hundreds of endings, so I can’t wait to plough on through to the end and compare my play-through. No doubt everyone will end up murdered in a matter of hours.

Elsewhere I’ve just started playing XCOM: Enemy Unknown. I know, I know, I’m a little bit late to this. I booted it up a couple of days ago and it’s got me absolutely hooked. I had no idea how fast-paced it would be for a turn-based tactical game, so it’s surprised me just how addictive the gameplay loop of missions, base-building and upgrades is. I think I’ve got time for just one more mission…

Squee: Oh, there’s only one thing on my gaming platter this weekend, and that’s the sublime Shadowrun: Hong Kong. These “What Are You Playing?”s are often a sneak peek into upcoming reviews and I am not afraid to admit that this is looking like it’s going to score well. There’s something about Shadowrun that, on paper, looks like it’s going to be a huge turn-off, all those trolls and elves in with your Gibsonian cyberpunk. But in practice it all works really well. Hollywood, take note - this series would make a great line of movies. As it is, though, I’m just glad we have the games.

Felix: This month, and some of last, has been mainly occupied by game video editing, as we push our new PC Game Benchmarks channel that is dedicated to just that. What that means to the focus of my gaming weekend ahead is that I will be layering in some mods on GTA V so that I can better explore how the game runs using certain hardware, under certain conditions. Its such a good laugh. So yeah, GTA V benchmarking is pretty much all I will do when I get a moment. Next week though, we see the start of the releases, so that should change things up for me as we take a look at MGS and Mad Max.

I should say as well, if you want to keep up to date with out PC Game Benchmarks channel then remember to subscribe; we've got all sorts of plans coming up for it the next few weeks.

Now then it's over to you. What gaming are you going to be tackling this weekend? Clearing out that backlog or planning on picking up a new game? Let us know!

I will be testing this Skyrim Co-op mod. Then most likely League of Legends and CS:GO. And I might hit up some old school MMORPG's like Ragnarok Online.

I'm back to Skyrim....for the 3rd time. Something about that game keeps me coming back. When I'm done with that I will play Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Well I was still playing the original version when the extended version was released. Of course I had to get the extended edition & I am not sorry that I did. STill one of my all time favorite games. Have you tried the redone version of AOE2 yet? That one is good also, but AOM is still my favorite out of all of those games. I love the heroes & myth units in AOM.

The game runs perfectly in both solo and co-op. The keyboard controls are horrid tho so if you don't have a controller I would not recommend playing it.
