Mad Max Graphics Options And Min-Max Benchmark Video On GTX 980 Ti

Avalanche Studios has a great track record when it comes to PC gaming, but alarm bells were inevitably set off when it was announced Warner Bros would be publishing its Mad Max game. Following disastrous PC launches for Batman: Arkham Knight and Mortal Kombat X there was rising unrest, and attention turned to Mad Max, which launched today.

Here we’ll be taking a look at just how the PC version has been handled, as well as the first gameplay footage and preliminary benchmark tests from the GeForce GTX 980 Ti. We'll be comparing how Mad Max looks at both minimum and ultra graphics, so you know whether that extra hardware power is a necessity. It’s time to see whether Mad Max is Avalanche’s Magnum Opus, or doomed to roam the wasteland for eternity.

If you're thinking about picking Mad Max up then remember you can check out the official system requirements over its game page, as well as get all sorts of info on how well it should run on your rig.

Mad Max Advanced Graphics Options

  • Presets: Normal / High / Very High
  • Fullscreen: Off / Borderless / On
  • Resolution
  • Vsync: Off / On
  • Anisotropic texture filtering: Off / 2 / 4 / 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 / 16
  • Geometric detail: Normal / High / Very High / Ultra High / Max
  • Shadows resolution: Normal / High / Very High
  • Number of shadowed lights: Off / Normal / High / Very High / Max
  • Texture detail: Normal / High
  • Decals: Normal / High / Very High
  • Motion blur: Off / On
  • Soft particles: Off / On
  • SSAO: Off / On
  • Point light specular: Off / On
  • Anti-aliasing: Off / On (presumably FXAA)
  • Parallax mapping on terrain: Off / On
  • Fog/particle upsampling quality: Normal / High
  • Depth of field quality: Normal / High
  • Volumetric light quality: Normal / High / Very High
  • Heat haze: Off / On

There's plenty on offer here which is fantastic to see. There's plenty of fine-tuning that can be done if you're struggling with frame rates, but based on early tests it appears Mad Max performs great. Avalanche said last week that it had developed the PC version in-house rather than farming it out like Arkham Knight was, created from the ground up for PC rather than a port.

Some of these options are going to be about preference rather than getting Mad Max looking better. Motion Blur, Soft Particles and Depth of Field are neat effects, but they do tend to make a game look more refined. The former does however help with frame rate hitches, so if you're experience occasional drops then enable this to paper over the cracks.

Mad Max GeForce GTX 980 Ti 1440 Min / Max Comparison

The benchmark video above was taken at 2560 x 1440 resolution, and as you can see the GeForce GTX 980 Ti can absolutely blitz through Mad Max at Ultra, notching up an average frame rate of 124. There’s only a comparatively small jump up to 143 frames per second when dropping settings to minimum. There's really not much headroom for more frames on the 980 Ti, suggesting a bottleneck elsewhere.

We still need to do some more tests on weaker graphics cards to really determine the performance impact when switching from Minimum to Ultra graphics in Mad Max. However, you can see a pretty hefty visual difference. Textures look a lot flatter and less detailed at minimum, and removing a number of the filtering effects has a dramatic impact on atmosphere. The easiest place to spot the difference is in the geometry. The mountain at the back as well as the ground to the right of Max looks extremely flat and angular at minimum, with significant depth and complexity added as the graphics options are pushed up.

Keep your eyes out for plenty more on Mad Max throughout this week, when we'll be putting it to the test against a number of gaming rigs.

Thanks for 1440p as priority 1. 4k benchmark would be nice but as good 4k monitors with g sync cost nearly 1000$ if under 30" it's not reality for most gamer's in years. Also fps probably drops below 60 (even if for fraction of a second).

I wonder what it'll be like at 4K, most likely minimum frames of 60 at Ultra.

Hope my rig will do this justice. Hell , I don't care, just gimme 30-45fps on med-high and I'm a happy gamer...

so apart from it being optimized nicely, does it also look good compared to some unoptimized games?

Dude that movie left us speechless! The nice thing about it is that the movie doesn't TALK a lot... instead - the focus on VISUAL storytelling. Basically no hand-holding, the story is there, you just SEE it unfold instead of being told what's happening. Back to the roots :)

I didn't like the movie, it's absolutely boring and only reason I watched it whole is that cars look really amazing and some scenes are cool, apart from that no value to me...

Two Overclocked 780Ti in SLI - you can have a look at anyone's rig by hovering the monitor icon next to their name.

P.S.: Get that rig verified!
