Up For Debate - 2015 Game Of The Year So Far

Written by Jon Sutton on Sun, Sep 13, 2015 4:00 PM

In comparison to a less than stellar 2014, 2015 has been an absolute blockbuster already. We’ve still got three months crammed with dozens and dozens of AAA titles to come, including the likes of Hitman, Fallout 4, Just Cause 3, Star Wars Battlefront and Need For Speed, to name but a few.

Now though we want to take a look back at the games that have already made this year special. We’re just over eight months deep and we’ve had a bunch of games scoring 9+. When it comes to PC exclusives we’ve been treated to Pillars of Eternity, Cities: Skylines, Kerbal Space Program, Shadowrun: Hong Kong and more, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Bring in the multiplatform games and it's off the charts. The Witcher 3 and GTA V, anyone?

Okay so we’ve put a fairly comprehensive poll together below, so it’s up to you choose your favourite game of the year so far, and let us know why in the comments. You can each vote three times.

Apologies if your chosen game isn’t in the list but if you drop us a message in the comments section we’ll be sure to take a look at it! This is preliminary voting to get an early indicator towards GD Global Game Awards that run in November this year.

What's your favourite game of 2015 so far?

Hello friend. In my opinion (an in many other's as you can see in the poll) the witcher 3 is a fantastic action RPG game. I most definitely recommend it. A playthrough can last anything between 50 to even 200 hours if you want to explore everything and complete every quest. As for the Rise of the Tomb raider yes I intend to play it since it seems to pay along the patch of Tomb Raider 2013, and I really enjoyed that game :D

The Witcher 3 is THE best RPG of them all (for me at least) because of the very good graphics, extraordinary story and soundtrack, meaningful choices, combat (some players don't like combat, but I love it, like I love Dark Souls), Gwent, I love that card game and much more. All in all it's a very good game and right now it's on sale on Greenmangaming for 22 GBP (34 dollars) on the VIP category.
Finished the game on highest difficulty on the first try, took me 137 hours.

Witcher 3 is a very good action RPG. I have over 100 hours played so far & I still haven't beaten the main quest line yet, nor have I explored all locations. I have managed to finish most of the side quest & about 3/4 of the main quest line. 100+ possible hours is worth it imo.

One thing GTA V can do that Witcher 3 can not is Multiplayer.
Damn! I would love to play multiplayer in Witcher 3 if it had one.

If the witcher had multiplayer, that would require devs to first make a multiplayer mode, then make good balance, then character creation, then a lot of new content, then delay it more for further optimization, do some net-code and a lot other thing. That would require time being spent on the multiplayer instead of the singleplayer, money being spent on the multiplayer instead of the singleplayer and would result in the witcher NOT having nearly as good singleplayer, NO THANK YOU...

Not to mention it would probably still be a mediocre multiplayer like it usually is on single player focused games.

You got a point.. They'll just do something like Elder Scrolls Online..
That would be better.

i LOVE both MGS and Witcher but Witcher 3 is GOTY by a mile - the story in MGS, without spoiling, is the weakest of the series

gta v release dates
PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 17 September 2013
PlayStation 4, Xbox One 18 November 2014
Microsoft Windows 14 April 2015 GOTY 3 years in a row would have just been hilarious :D

As a driving simulation gamer, this year was special with the release of the ONLY Rally simulation in a DECADE.
Richard Burns in 2004, Dirt Rally in 2015.
It's a niche, so won't get many votes, but how come you don't even list it?
If the justification is the early access, ok then... I'll vote in 2016 ;)

Witcher 3 and GTA 5! There's nothing else I played this year (except for the older Bioshock Infinite) that grasped me so much!

Not an MGS fan, zero hype, never played it. Actually, I've not got past the first village in W1 and I have not even played W2 at all before picking up W3 and I still think Witcher3 is incredible!

...and it matters because..?

(besides, the 2015 release comes out on more platform and is enhanced beyons what the original game was. But if you don't like it - don't vote for it!)

It matters because "game of the year" means a game from that YEAR should be the only eligible candidate for the list. By your logic let's throw some Battletoads in there for good measure.

The game itself is fantastic. It just ran like a turd for everyone. It's now running pretty darn well with patches.

Is it? The mechanics are almost identical, with only really new one being the car which is cool but those tank battles get boring really quickly and they are everywhere..

Opinions are like nipples, everybody has one. Some have firm points, others are barely discernible through layers, and some are displayed at every opportunity regardless of whether the audience has stated "I am interested in your nipples" or not.

Lol. I know, I just stated mine :P. I hope the "audience" doesnt mind. I just wish they had changed the combat some more. Exact same combat for 4 games was too much for me :P. Cause I generally enjoy arkham games and I have played all the previous ones. If you havent played some or all the previous games then certainly it wont be boring. Even if you have played them of course I can still understand it if you find the game fun.

Haven't gotten my hands on MGS5 yet, but I'd say The witcher 3, Total War Attila and Project Cars... Most of the games on this list I've played and I find really dull to be honest.

I have really enjoyed The Witcher 3 and old blood. I spent hundreds of hours in Witcher 3 and did almost every side mission I could , got up to the hghest level you could possibly get without the expansions (around 37 usually) and completed the main story too. The game was very long and it was very enjoyable so I don't really mind. Only games that took me more to complete than this is Final Fantasy 7 and 8. Old Blood is also very nice game.I am also really enjoying MGS 5 now

Metal Gear Solid V gets my vote, while GTA5 is definitely a spectacularly optimized game its not really a 2015 game, Batman Arkham Knight would have gotten my vote if it weren't for rocksteady's and nvidias major screw up.
