Up For Debate - Console Exclusives That Should Come To PC

Written by Jon Sutton on Sat, Sep 12, 2015 4:00 PM

Exclusives have traditionally been the lifeblood of games consoles, even if in recent years Sony and Microsoft have been increasingly less reliant on them. They’re the standard bearers. The mascots. The experiences that aren’t available anywhere else. Freed of their exclusivity though, it’s doubtful that many of these would even exist. In the case of Sony it’s typically an avenue for its more experimental games. For every Uncharted 4 there’s a stack of games like Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, Until Dawn and The Tomorrow Children.

Despite the abundance of PC ports we’re getting these days though - Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen being a recent example - there’s still plenty of console exclusives we’d still love to see come over. Just the thought of Nintendo on Steam creates meteoric expectations. So here’s a chance for us to mull over which console exclusives we want to see come over to PC, unleashed with additional graphical horsepower, mod support and more.

Red Dead Redemption - I mean, come on, why hasn’t this happened already? The vast majority of Rockstar’s ‘good’ titles have made it over, and yet here we are, five years later, with no sign of John Marston. All sorts of rumours have sprung up about Red Dead Redemption, despite Rockstar themselves saying it would be too complicated to port, for whatever reason. I’m not asking for the world here, just an up-ressed version of a modern classic.

Likelihood -

Super Mario Galaxy - 3D platforming on anything but Nintendo consoles is an absolute state right now. When people can get excited about Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures or The Last Tinker you know 3D platforming is in a bad way on PC. We’ve got practically every other genre covered but this. I use Super Mario Galaxy as an example, but pick and choose any 3D Mario game, they’re all genuine masterpieces unmatched anywhere else. There’s less legitimate ways to play Super Mario Galaxy in HD of course, but just imagine the implications of Nintendo releasing a game on PC.

Likelihood -

Halo 5: Guardians - The move of the Halo series from PC and Mac to the original Xbox was basically daylight robbery. Sure we eventually got treated to some late ports of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, but Master Chief is Xbox through and through now. What’s perhaps most frustrating is PC gamers get lumped with Halo Online, which is bizarrely exclusive to Russia. I despair. Then we had Gamescom, when Microsoft closed its show with a Halo PC announcement. Oh, it’s Halo Wars 2. Throw us a bone Microsoft - it’s about time Halo 5: Guardians got announced for PC.

Likelihood -

Final Fantasy XV - Now this one’s a bit far away and it could be total dross, but this would be a huge step forward if it happened. Square Enix is slowly but surely bringing its entire catalogue of Final Fantasy games to Steam, with FFV recently announced for later this month. The FF XIII Lightning trilogy is now almost all on PC. Now it’s time to look to the future, at Final Fantasy XV.

Likelihood -

The Last of Us - Naughty Dog is one of the finest development studios on the planet, but if you want to play any of its illustrious catalogue you’re going to need a suite of PlayStation consoles. Putting Uncharted, Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter to the side for a moment, it’s the absolute masterpiece that is The Last of Us that we would to see given the special treatment on PC. Just the thought of its beautiful apocalyptic world in 4K is enough to give me heart palpitations.

Likelihood -

That’s a bit of a minute selection so I’ll throw it out to the rest of you, which console exclusives would you like to see make it over to PC, and how likely do you think it is that it’ll eventually happen?

Why Halo 5: Guardians? Give me Halo 3 and I'll be in heaven. And before that I would play 1 and 2 all over again.

Read Dead Redemption - one of those games that the PC community has always been missing out really badly. Rockstar should really work on porting (or totally building again from scratch) the game on PC since PS3 is of the old generation.

Super Mario Galaxy is already on the PC in the form of emulation. And it's not even illegal as long as you own the original game disc (as far as I know..)

"...3D platforming is in a bad way on PC..."

Did you forget about A Hat in Time and Yooka-Laylee? And that every Mario game after Galaxy has been meh (SMG2, 3D World) or crap (3D Land, NSMB2)?

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is meh? Really? I have heard only praising word about it...and it has metacritic score of 97. Hard to believe it would be "meh".
