I love surprises, and the news that Deus Ex: Revision is out today is exactly that. I mean, I hadn’t even heard of its existence until now, but it’s a Square Enix-sanctioned total makeover for the original Deus Ex that should be the perfect holdover until Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

The fan-created Deus Ex: Revision mod provides a top to bottom overhaul of the visuals, environments and the soundtrack, and is available today as a free download for the original Deus Ex on Steam. “Where other projects fill in detail around the edges of the game by tuning gameplay mechanics or improving textures, we focus on the visceral core of the Deus Ex experience, bringing new level design, aesthetic direction and world-building detail,” said John French, creative director at Caustic Creative.

What is slightly unusual is how keen Square Enix and Eidos Montreal have been to give Deus Ex: Revival the thumbs up. It’s an officially supported mod by this point, so this sounds as if it’s the definitive way to re-play (or discover for the first time) one of the greatest games of all time.

It smacks of free marketing on Square Enix’s part to get involved with the mod, but I have to say Deus Ex: Revision has got me tempted in for another playthrough of this cyberpunk classic. It’s one of my favourite games of all time and it’s great to see it given a bit of a overhaul to sharpen off the rougher edges. It’s still no looker by today’s standards of course, but anything that makes an already great game even better is good news in my book.

Deus Ex: Revival is available at 6PM BST, so that’s about 30 minutes after this article goes live. Will you be giving the mod a download?
