DOOM's back. The king of shooters has returned this weekend for a Closed Alpha, inviting a select group of players in for the glorious opportunity to blow chunks out of each other on a cold October weekend. Like a giblety Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Built on id's new id Tech 6 engine, DOOM 2016 promises to be an absolute graphics powerhouse. If the latest gameplay video is anything to go by, it doesn't disappoint.
Naturally when a game comes along from the folks at id Software, the hardware demands are the talk of the town. They're practically the reasons graphics cards exist in the first place. So whether you've been lucky enough to get into the Closed Alpha or not, have a peek at the DOOM Alpha system requirements to get an idea of just what sort of gaming rig will be needed in 2016.
DOOM Alpha Minimum System Requirements
- OS: Windows 7 64-bit
- CPU: Intel Core i5-660 3.33GHz or AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz
- RAM: 8GB System Memory
- GPU RAM: 2GB Video Memory
- GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7870
- HDD: 6GB Free Hard Drive Space
DOOM Alpha Recommended System Requirements
- CPU: Intel Core i7-2600 3.4 GHz or AMD FX-8350 4.0 GHz
- GPU RAM: 3GB Graphics Memory
- GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 or AMD Radeon R9 280
Now these system requirements are for the DOOM Closed Alpha so they're obviously subject to change, but they do give us a good idea of where they're heading with the hardware demands. id Software's games are traditionally graphics powerhouses and DOOM is no different. Consider as well this is will be chaotic, lightning-quick action in multiplayer, a stable 60 frames per second is going to be a must.
DOOM is built on the studio's proprietary id Tech game engine, this time id Tech 6. It's the first ever game to use id Tech 6 so we haven't got a lot to go on just yet, only that it's OpenGL-based. This means it doesn't take advantage of DirectX features so it's not going to have any of those DX12 benefits, unless id has baked it in themselves under the hood.
Onto the system requirements and the minimum demands aren't too surprising. The AMD FX-8350 CPU seems totally excessive in comparison to the i5-660 Intel CPU. On the AMD front we'd expect you to be able to cope fine with a higher-end quad-core Phenom processor. Otherwise, the graphics cards required seem pretty reasonable for a game like DOOM. You'll likely be able to get away with less, but it's going to cost you a frame rate drop. In a game so dependent on twitch shooting and quick reactions, this is less than ideal.
Moving up to the recommended DOOM system requirements and these are pretty high end but exactly to be expected of a graphics powerhouse launching in 2016. If these cards can crank out Ultra at 1080p then that seems like a totally fair deal.
One last thing - that 6GB size is strictly for the Alpha; the main game will be many times larger than this, so don't go getting your hopes up!

Minimum CPU for Intel = 1st Gen i5 , Minimum CPU for AMD = 8 core @ 4.0 GHz -_-
PC Specs
that's what they had available, that's what they tested, developers don't spend countless hours buying different hardware, making every possible combination of CPU and GPU to test what you need exactly, they test 3-4 systems and that's it.
PC Specs
Yes but putting an i5 660 as min along a fx 8350 is a bit too hard to believe and propably makes no sense . They should had given it more thought .
PC Specs
What the hell is a Nvidia GeForce GT 660 ? :/
PC Specs
I'm guessing they mean a GTX 660. So if they cant even get the name of the required GPU correct, how much stock should we put in this info? (Presuming this is not just a mistake on the part of the GD editorial, wheres the source BTW?)
PC Specs
I agree if it isn't an error from GD who DO we trust on this type of information?
PC Specs
there is only one desktop 660 GPU from Nvidia and that's the gtx 660... so hard to figure that out.... NOT... :D
PC Specs
minimum CPU requirement: Intel dual core or AMD octocore... I'm sure at this point they're just throwing random product numbers out there.
PC Specs
The "Compare your graphics card to the DOOM GPU benchmark chart" link is broken; it leads to Hard West when I click on it.
Guess I'll have to get a new GPU for Christmas. I was thinking of a Sapphire Vapor-X R9 280X. Really looking forward to the campaign details to come. The last iteration, Doom 3, had a pretty good version of the base story plot so I expect at least as good an attempt with this
PC Specs
Are you sure it's GT 660?
PC Specs
Am I the only one with the beta registration that hasn't gotten into the Alpha?
PC Specs
pls let my core 2 quad run this
PC Specs
Dont worry u will play this just fine with costum settings
PC Specs
when he says costume he means low settings
PC Specs
Stop with the overcapacity of 2gb vram! I don't want to buy another GPU yet :(
PC Specs
I bet you won't have to if the game is semi-decently optimized.
PC Specs
just buy when u need it, i dont mind playin games on low xD ive played on worse so np
PC Specs
Unacceptable requirements for one more time!
PC Specs
Remember that this is alpha requirements. The final product should be well optimized
PC Specs
What is acceptable requirement for you?
PC Specs
I bet that in some years you ganna see a 980ti for minimum and you are gonna be okay with it, won't you?
PC Specs
Well in 'some years' nvidia X50 or X60 cards will be stronger than todays 980 ti.Just look at AC unity or Batman Arkham Knight.GTX 680(best GPU few years ago)for minimum. So it wouldn't be that odd to see 980 ti for minimum in few years. However requirements usually aren't correct, people with a lot weaker rigs play the game just fine even though their rigs are below minimum.
PC Specs
You don't answer my question. If you don't agree on something at least give a reason why. Be more helpful than useless.
PC Specs
hm well these requirements for alpha stage are pretty damn good tbh :) on final realease will be easily enough to max this game with a gtx 760 :)
PC Specs
what overkill requirements, I bet my arss that if the game is at least decently optimized and the developers are NOT diks to make it NOT run on dual cores a dual core pentium haswell/skylake will be able to run it no problem.
PC Specs
an i5 660 is a dual core. So you are probably right.
PC Specs
I can run RAGE (Id tech 5) on my Intel HD graphics 3000(Core i3) 30fps Medium settings. I have high hopes this game will be optimized too.
PC Specs
RAGE was idTech5 and also OLD, dude. I Run RAGE on a single GTX 780M at 4K 60FPS with MSAA and no drops in framerate. This won't compare.
PC Specs
i find it curious that the recommended gpus are a 780 or 280... those gpus aren't really comparable. does that mean that doom 4 will be heavily amd optimised, or does it mean nothing? we'll see.
PC Specs
I noticed that too,r9 280 isn't as strong as the 780,my guess is that these are the cards they had laying around to test this game.
PC Specs
And they will adjust the requirments with amd's and nvidia's equivalent gpu later
PC Specs
I think they just picked the weakest 3GB card from either side.
PC Specs
good guess. didn't think about that connection.
PC Specs
The "how well your PC can run the DOOM System Requirements here" relinks me to Hard West, not DOOM 4.
