Star Wars Battlefront Fixes And Balance Tweaks To Make Multiplayer Game Of Year

Star Wars Beta turned up and treated us to a classic Rebel versus Imperial Hoth battle. And included a huge array of iconic Star Wars sounds and vehicles, like the mighty AT-ATs. Fans of Battlefront new and old flooded into play the latest multiplayer shooter by DICE.

DICE are the devs behind the highly popular Battlefield series and are pretty skilled at getting the EA’s bespoke Frostbite Engine to turn itself into a fast paced shooter. Star Wars Battlefront releases on November 17th and what we are going to explore here is, what does DICE need to fix to SW Battlefront before it launches.

Remove melee movement hinderance

Your player movement is hampered if you ever attempt a melee strike, in the fast paced Battlefront. It this nerfing of the melee attack that seems out of sorts in SW Battlefront. The slow down in movement is jarring to the player control and hinders their game flow. It makes melee attacks almost pointless, due to the speed of the rest of the game.

Display gamer ping

There is no visual trace of ping, so we cant see who is suffering from a bad in game ping. Ping can greatly affect the quality of the game, for someone who has a low ping through to people playing with someone who has a low ping. But rather than just kicking the unfortunate soul with the low ping, by providing the information on the ping to other players you give everyone the choice of whether they want to play with that person or not.

Add VOIP to let players chat to each other

Multiplayer games that rely on or encourage comprehensive team based tactics should really have real time player chat supported. Talking via a microphone to members in your squad is fun and important to the development of the game.

Grenade blast radius, and grenade notification bugs

Fun as they are, these devices were a bane in the SW Battlefront beta. There were lots of situations where a player would glance around in time to see a thermal detonator flying through the air into their general vicinity. Despite landing a good distance away or being quick enough to get some yards from it, the blast radius would still catch you and insta kill. This seemed over powered.

Add to this the game would provide unnecessary notifications for inbound grenades. As your teammate’s grenade, which were not colour coded, would also instigate a warning. This would make sense but there was no friendly fire. So you would sprint away from the teammate grenade despite it never being able to hurt you. Just odd. Then there was other grenade related issues, including ones caused by server lag. CRAP the grenade is at my feet, not over there. Despite what I said above, sometimes the notification turn up at all and sometimes the notification turned up and wouldnt disappear promptly following the grenade explosion, leading you to think there might be more grenades around you.

Better vehicle spawn location

If you picked up a vehicle spawn token and get using it, if you die you often respawn back to the area near where the vehicle spawn token will reappear. Which means that the same people will keep recycling the vehicles instead of giving everyone a fair chance at getting a go.

Matchmaking needs server browser feature

Currently no server browser and just matchmaking. People want to join friends, get in buddy squads to make the game their own experience.

Safer spawn areas

A player enjoys a couple of seconds of spawn invincibility once they turn up in a match, but if they turn up in a stupid space then they are doomed regardless. Occasional spawn deaths are expected, but it happens a lot. With no forward warning regarding potential spawn location safety this needs to be addressed.

Weapon balancing - The DLT-19 blaster was everyones weapon of choice. In Battlefront there is no recoil on blasters due to firing lasers. This makes it a lot easier to master aiming and firing repeatedly than in other FPS games. So where you fire is where you hit and if your aim felt off you can adjust without any worry due to the lack of recoil. The fast firing DLT-19 Heavy Blaster Rifle enjoyed a quick cool-down leading it to come across as very over-powered. People were using their jetpacks with incredible accuracy, dropping into tactical spot and tearing through anyone who got near them with the DLT-19.

Better multiplayer game training and in-game guidance

Battlefront has a lot to it. But DICE need to work harder on in game training and game objective cues. Having an official Star Wars theme wrapped all around this will bring in PC gamers from all walks of gaming genres. They will be turning up with little fore-knowledge of how a tactical multiplayer shooter works. And so the advanced game mechanics will be largely overlooked and even some of the more common ones might be missed. In general this could lead to a general simplification of the game, putting off hardcore gamers and similarly providing less long term appeal to those newcomers. For example, there is a quick cooldown feature included in Star Wars Battlefront that if pressed at the right time would give you a much faster cooldown and get you back in the action far more quickly. How many new about that?

Give the player the ability to Vault over cover

Like in other fast paced shooters, including Battlefield, the player wants to be able to leap over low scenery effortlessly. In some cases the player NEEDS to be able to spring over sticky terrain. This feature is often a benchmark that signifies to a gamer the difference between a top tier multiplayer game, one providing premium player controls, compared to an average arcady romp, that is likely to be short lived.

Obviously DICE have designed Star Wars Battlefront to be more arcady and to push itself as far away from the standard Battlefield mechanics as possible. But when Battlefield was built by the same guys and they evolved that formula over years to be as good as they could imagine for a squad/team based multiplayer shooter, well it seems like a big ask. Some things will have to be sacrificed to achieve it. But hopefully in doing so it means that some things will be able to be improved. I am very much looking forward to see how the overall game comes together in a few weeks time.

So that pretty much wraps it up from me. But what did you guys find was missing that DICE should be focusing on for the final release?

I think safer spawns is a must. The beta felt like less of battle and more of a turkey shoot with the way spawns were set. Apart from that if DICE could sneak in a space battle or two and maybe some form of campaign where you conquer the galaxy then that would be lovely. Also a bit of Clone Wars action wouldn't go a miss... Just saying

Add a single player/co-op Galactic Conquest mode like Battlefront 2 had & the game will be okay.

Without a Galactic Conquest mode the game gets boring too fast. This new Battlefront will never get game of the year unless EA pays the VGAs under the table to make it so.

I mean that the fact that it may not be similar to the old battlefront games doesnt automatically make it a bad game imo :)

Actually that does make it a bad "Battlefront" game. If they wanted to make their own FPS Star Wars game then so be it, but don't taint the Battlefront franchise with such a crappy game like this new one. Other than having a Star Wars skin this new game is nothing like a Battlefront game. I mean where are all of the bots that made the battles feel so big & epic in the first two games? Where is the story mode/galactic conquest mode?

All maps & modes should have a single player, co-op, & multi player option.

As is this game is 90% multi player with very little for someone that doesn't want to play online to do. The old games were better balanced between single player & multi player options.

I disagree that its a crappy game but simly a multiplayer game which isnt bad at all. Its comletely subjective. However, I definitely agree that they just used the "battlefront" title just to attact extra attention even if the the game has more differences than similarities with the old battlefront games.

Yeah like I said before "If they wanted to make their own FPS Star Wars game then so be it, but don't taint the Battlefront franchise"

I think it is crap because it is setup too much like CoD with the leveled upgrades & such. The old Battlefronts had several preset characters/load-outs, & basically if you wanted to change your play style you chose a different type of character on re-spawn. I mean it was great to choose between a Wookie, a Bothan, a Rebel Soldier, ect...

I see what you mean and yeah I hope there will be a lot more choices and variety on gameplay than what we saw in the beta. The reason I love the battlefield series is because of that exactly. I may be defending this game and saying its not crappy but what I actually mean is that we dont know yet. It may end up good or it may end up swallow and boring and monotonous but I have built some trusth in DICE.

Fair enough.

Yeah on it's own this new game may turn out good, but as a Battlefront game it really isn't good like it is right now. Now they may add enough features to make it good, but they will charge out the @ss for those features that should have been part of the base game via DLC.

I mean the current pricing is just insane. It certainly isn't worth what they are asking.

Funny because I literally have hundreds of hours playing them. In fact I still play Battlefront 2 on PC. They should have just re-skinned battlefront 2 with this new graphics engine. That would be a lot better than what they have done.

So no... as a fan of the first two games I will not get over it.

I feel the same. This to me is just not Battlefront and DICE should of thought about calling it something else because since this game was announced the comparisons between it and the original games have been endless. The lack of features that made the original games great, to me, just makes this game feel underwhelming and unsatisfying to someone who has been waiting for a third SW Battlefront game since SWB 2 was released.

Yep that's it exactly. As soon as I saw features locked by experience level in the multi player I knew that they had bastardized the Battlefront franchise. One of the things I liked the most about the old games was that everyone was always balanced because of preset load-out characters. You picked which one suited your play style without having a leveled advantage. Everything was always fair in the old games because of how they were setup.

By changing that system the game would like Star Wars Call of Duty really also during the beta i normally got AT-ST instead of AT-AT which is less OP and can be killed easily.

The thing is... if you play as the Imperials you don't even have to try to win. Even if everybody in the team dies and dies etc. they will still win if the rebels don't have the brain to destroy the walkers.

On first days of the Beta, pretty much every match was won by imperials. But on last days of the beta when players had figured it out, wins were about 50-50.
So to me Walker assault seemed completely balanced between sides, the problem was that at the beginning everyone was playing it like TDM :)

Make ADS (Aim Down Sights) a viable option. In beta hipfire was so accurate you had no reason to use your sights, which is stupid and makes no sense.
Netcode needs to be good at launch of course,to gain some trust from the players that have seen BF4 netcode at it's launch, fix spawns, they were really terrible in beta.
Balance out weapons and add more of them, nerf the grenades.
Add much more content to the game because the beta was so repetitive I got bored after just 3-4 hours in it.
Balance out rebels and inperials in walker assault.
AND THE MOST IMPORTANT,DO NOT ASK 120 GODDAMN EUROS FOR THE FULL GAME WITH SEASON PASS! That is just a robbery.

It wasn't, Rebel side needed to play with total concentration and not make a single mistake to win. On the other hand Empire side could win without even pushing hard.
