Having been treated to plenty of extensive gameplay demos already, Naughty Dog used its spot at Paris Games Week to show off PS4 exclusive Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’s multiplayer component. It’s not exactly been a huge selling point for previous Uncharted titles but it feels like a solid multiplayer element is needed nowadays to shift $60 games with campaigns which may last just 8-12 hours.
Uncharted 4 promises to come with precisely that. Designed to take advantage of the series’ trademark agility, each of the maps will be complex environments that reward exploration. Picking one of Uncharted’s iconic characters, you can also hire one of four sidekicks to help you out in the wild, tracking enemies, reviving allies and providing cover fire. There’s also Mystical items and supernatural perks inspired by the previous games. In the trailer we see the cursed El Dorado sarcophagus from Drake's Fortune, which infects everyone around it and kills them almost instantly.
Visually the trailer looks very odd. It’s kind of difficult to see where the CGI ends and the gameplay begins. It’s certainly nowhere near the visual quality of the single-player footage to be seen, but I guess that’s a sacrifice that’s got to be made to hit 60fps in multiplayer. Other than though Uncharted 4 looks like an absolute blast, and it reminds me a little of the Splinter Cell multiplayer in the way in which you can clamber about these rich environments to sneak up on your foes.
The Uncharted 4: A Thief's End multiplayer beta will be running from December 4th through to the 13th. To gain access you'll need a code, which you can only get for coughing up for the Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. If you don't fancy spending £40 for a beta then you haven't got too long to wait; Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is out worldwide on March 18th, 2016.
