Activision Buy Candy Crush Saga Developer King For Nearly 6 Billion USD

Activision, the world’s largest third-party videogame publisher, has been splashing the cash again. Quite a lot of cash in fact, to the tune of $5.9 billion for Candy Crush Saga developer King. The acquisition is still awaiting approval in Ireland, where King is based, but aside from dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s, Activision is now publisher of the Saga games.

King’s slew of Candy Crush Saga games and spin-offs are consistently the highest earners in the App Store and on Google Play, which goes some distance to explaining why Activision paid $2 billion more than the price Disney paid for the Star Wars franchise. It’s the equivalent of $125 for each and every user of King’s games.

Activision’s last annual revenue was $4.7 billion, while King raked in $2.1 billion. With the new acquisition, Activision Blizzard’s revenue should now total more than $6.8 billion. It means Activision now owns Candy Crush Saga, Soda Saga, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Starcraft, Hearthstone, Destiny, Skylanders, Diablo, and, erm… Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5. Which is a staggering amount of money earners basically.

It’s all part of a new-found initiative from Activision Blizzard to make inroads into mobile gaming, something which has already paid off well with Hearthstone.

"The combined revenues and profits solidify our position as the largest, most profitable standalone company in interactive entertainment," said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick.

"With a combined global network of more than half a billion monthly active users, our potential to reach audiences around the world on the device of their choosing enables us to deliver great games to even bigger audiences than ever before."

I find that last bit fascinating. More than 1 in 7 people globally are playing an Activision Blizzard game every month. It’s the definition of a giant. This massive purchase does come at a risk though, and mobile developers are typically very volatile. The bubble burst for Angry Birds developer Rovio recently, while Farmville’s Zynga has found itself in all sorts of trouble. A huge purchase like this not paying off could land even Activision in trouble, but for now it’s clout makes it one of the biggest players around.

The amount of money games like candy crush and the like earn makes me very sad. Pathetic games with minimal cost to produce, that are extremely boring and annoying filled with microtransactions and they make billions... while some fanstastic quality indie or not games cant even reach 1/100 of that...
