Ubisoft has been forced to postpone its Rainbow Six Siege open beta. Due to to go live yesterday afternoon, Ubisoft cited technical problems and connection issues across all three supported platforms as the reason for delaying. So PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One gamers were all struggling to connect to online matches. Worrying news considering Rainbow Six Siege is launching this coming Tuesday.
“We’re currently seeing issues with matchmaking times and disconnection on all platforms,” writes community manager Ubi_Jax. “As such we’re postponing the Open Beta until a later time and keeping the game under Closed Beta status. We apologize for the delay and can assure you this is our top priority.”
The beta test is designed to spot issues exactly like this, but it’s concerning just how late in the day the problem has surfaced. Ubisoft has already ran two closed beta tests, including a technical test, so it seemed with launch just five days away this was more of a demo period than anything else.
Despite Ubisoft’s giant status, it’s still an unknown quantity in the online gaming space. None of its titles have been huge multiplayer hits, so it’s perhaps worrying that its inexperience could be exposed like this. We’re hopeful Ubisoft gets Rainbow Six Siege sorted out in time for its launch, particularly considering it would be a great game for the holidays. The truth is though that it’s running out of time. That December 1st launch is zooming in, and without a strong online infrastructure it could be a shaky launch. Is it even possible we could see Rainbow Six Siege delayed at this late stage?
Ubisoft is certainly still confident everything will be ironed out on time for its launch. Ubi_Jax says "This Open Beta will ensure the cleanest launch possible. Keep in mind that this beta is intended for this exact reason: find problems and troubleshoot them to ensure the most stable launch possible. We are confident the game will work as intended since the known issue will be fixed soon. Therefore the launch will not be impacted by this issue.”
That was posted yesterday evening, and since then it’s attempted to push a few updates to sort out the issue. Have any GD’ers had any success in connecting? Could we see another Battlefield 4 style launch? Let us know what you think!
