AMD Users Find Radeon Crimson Driver Bug Is Throttling Fan Speed And Raising Temps

Written by Jon Sutton on Fri, Nov 27, 2015 4:00 PM

GD’er Rayyan51 contacted me today saying that he’d been having problems with his Radeon R7 250X since installing the latest Radeon Software Crimson Edition drivers. AMD’s massive driver overhaul arrived earlier this week, packing in all sorts of benefits and performance boosts. For Rayyan51 though, it just caused issues.

The Crimson Driver software was adjusting the GPU fan speed down to 30%, whatever the demands of the game. He turned it to auto but again it reset to 30% following a complete reboot. So I did a little bit of digging and it turns out Rayyan51 isn’t alone. There’s plenty of other people experiencing similar problems. Lowering the fan speed can have a serious impact on a graphics card’s heat dissipation, which can cause damage to your rig in the long run.

On Reddit it looks as if the problem isn’t just with the 250X either. A wide range of people are experience the bug, which lowers the GPU fan speed down to around 30% of its maximum.

I have this issue in which everytime I start a new game the fan speed sets itself to manual so I have to alt tab and adjust it, kinda sucks,” says Reddit user shackerztv.

Most people are noticing the problem when the performance of their Radeon graphics cards is throttled. MetalGearReddit said they “Had exactly the same thing keep happening to me yesterday. Realised when the card went north of 100c and throttled itself down. I find it keeps setting itself to manual regardless of the global, or per game setting. But worrying!

If you don’t want to cause any damage to your graphics card then you’ve got a couple of options here. Firstly, you could manually change the fan speed settings every time you boot and quit out of a game. The other option, and the one I’d have to recommend, is that you roll back to the previous 15.11.1 Catalyst drivers. There's a driver cleaner tool included with Crimson so just run that first. The general consensus is that this reverts fan speed back to normal. Then it’s just a case of waiting for a fix from AMD.

Have any of you been experiencing fan speed problems since installing the Crimson Software? Let us know if you've had any issues!

Don't know this service and do not yet possess a Radeon, but here is something you can try to use if you are experiencing the mentioned above issue or any other driver related problem.

Google for: AMD Issue Reporting Form.

my temperature is this driver is 74 to 80 degrees celsius(cap fps to 25 fps).. normally I only get 65 degrees(cap fps to 25 fps) lower. I think i will skip this driver for a while and wait for the fix.

Tried to install on Ubuntu, just got greeted with error after error. After finally resolving the errors, the installation said it'd been completed successfully, but I'd need to reboot for the changes to happen. Rebooted and Ubuntu went straight into basic graphics mode, and had to completely uninstall all proprietary drivers and move to the open source ones instead. Took about 2 hours to fix. Was looking forward to the new UI as well as the possible performance increase, but I guess that won't be happening :/

I've got quite a few problems with the drivers as well. Host Application often stops working, I get the "Display driver has stopped working..." error and graphic glitches in games. Hope they sort this stuff out soon.

Did you try reinstalling your Display Driver?

Would this apply to laptops as well? Mine has a Radeon HD 6750M, for which the Crimson beta will be the last driver ever....but laptops are different in this regard, right?

wow this is surprising to me cause what AMD told me was that crimson was meant to allow you gpus to use the full top speed of the fan like in my case its allow my gpus to push the fans to the speed of 4404rpm instead of the limited 3943 that the prevous driver manager allowed butthen again ive got an R9 not a R7

I tried installing it, but then my screen just went black. My monitor didn't say "No signal", it just received a blank signal from my GPU. I had to do a hard reset to get my pc working again.

Only issue is my Freesync doesn't work with Fallout 4. When it's on, it cuts fps to 37. Turn it off, it's at 70. Hard to go back from Freesync once you start using it. Other than that no real issues like the ones mentioned.

Thankfully the people encountering bugs are a minority. On the other hand this driver has offered a lot of amazing stuff. Stuff I didnt even know a graphics driver can achieve o.O.

Do you have the fan set to off or on? Off will set it to auto but the fan curve is awful. If you set it to on it will leave it at a steady state. Like 50% or something. Its why i use afterburner setting a fan curve is just awesome.

I have the fan problem with my 560TI. It stays on 30, hits 90C then 100%, cools down to 80C, back to 30% and so on. MSI has the fix for me with custom fan curve, but I have the idea that those fans are just bad, not enough air goes through the heatsink, because temps raise fast even with 100% fan. I cleaned it and applied MX4 paste.

560 Ti is an Nvidia card. You should be using Nvidia drivers and not AMD's Crimson.

Just solve my problem I use AMD CLEAN UNISTALL and Display Driver Uninstaller and then install Crimson driver again bcoz I didn't want to install 15.11 catalyst bcoz crimson driver giving me performance boost and like 8 FPS Increase and a Stability. Now my problem has gone and I am playing my favorite games
If someone has this issue yet try this method :)

Good to hear man. I guess some stuff was left behind. Glad its fixed. I still prefer my msi fan curve. 64C is better then 84C.

long live msi custom fan control :D
Not that I need my fans to run at more than 30% when I've capped my FPS.

Yea thats the difference between the 380 and 390 haha. My 390 gets hot quite quick, if i use my headphones i hear nada. Without em though id comfortable at MAX 70% fan speed it gets quite loud. Running rainbow six siege card doesnt even break 50C and the game is BUTTER SMOOTH.
