For some, the clash of steel on steel and the cries of battle are nought but an annoyance. Something that gets in the way of more cerebral pursuits. Like card battling. It would be fair to say The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s Gwent collectible card game has built up its fair share of supporters. All the questing in the world can’t quite beat the thrill of hunting down two bits of card stuck together with PVA glue, with the words Cirilla Fiona Elen Rianno emblazoned across the front.
Gwent-inclined The Witcher 3 players will be pleased then to see a new mod for Geralt’s adventure that replaces all combat with Gwent matches. During every enemy encounter, Geralt will whip out his deck of cards rather than his blade, relying on intellect rather than brute force to overcome your foes.
The moment you enter battles is a bit jarring in the video below, but the overall concept is pretty clever. Once you’re thrown into a battle you play against your opponent at Gwent, and every NPC involved in the fight will be automatically slain should you win the match. Lose and you’re dead, so there’s not much room for error here. The higher the level of an enemy, the harder the Gwent match is. That saves you having to play Gwent against each and every enemy, but it’s sure to be a heck of a lot of Gwent.
It’s still early days for the mod just yet, and creator DickDanger Justice still has plenty of plans to come, including tiered loot, a modified economy focusing on cards, and special drops from bosses. It reminds me a little bit of the Pokemon Trading Card Game on Game Boy Color if anyone remembered that.
You can find the the Hearts of Cards mod over on NexusMods now.
Anyone tempted to start up a fresh game of The Witcher 3 and see how this mod holds up? Or is the prospect of never-ending Gwent card battling too much to take?
