RPCS3 Team Are Making Impressive Advances On PlayStation 3 Emulation

PlayStation 3 emulation is pretty much the holy grail of emulation at this point. Sony’s notoriously finicky console with its CELL processor has proven to be a tricky beast, but in a new video it looks as the RPCS3 team are narrowing in a solution.

They’ve managed to get After Burner Climax up and running on their emulator. Despite some significant visual glitches and poor performance during cut-scenes, it looks as if they’re not too far off with the software. They’re running in on an Intel Core i7-6700K with a GeForce GTX 970 and 16GB RAM so they’ve got some serious grunt behind it.

There’s clearly still a ways to go here but it’s some tantalising first steps. For a long while it was though it was going to be near impossible to replicate the PS3. What we’re really hoping for of course is to get to the bigger, more demanding exclusives like The Last of Us, Resistance, Demon’s Souls, Uncharted, Journey etc. The prospect of playing all these in enhanced resolutions with improved frame rates is tantalising to say the least.

What PlayStation 3 games would you like to see emulated by RPCS3? Do you think we're still a long ways off from 100% accurate PS3 emulation?

This is, quite frankly, completely ridiculous from every angle. Ridiculous in the sense that here we see a group of people unrelated and unaffiliated with Sony, bringing real progress to a working PS3 emulator for PC. While that's not such a shock on it's own, the part where it gets to be idiotic is when you look at Sony itself, struggling with the idea of giving us PS2 backward compatibility on the PS4...nonsense!

Is business, PS2 age was the pick of Sony and give retro compatibility could cut sales from new games.

The PS exclusives that concern me the most are Read Dead Redemption and the Uncharted anthology. It would be great if I could play these games on PC in the future.

By the time they finish and Xbox Emulator, I think Microsoft will up the game and let us play our Xbox games on our PC.

I don't think MS will ever permit free emulation on PC, in fact I don't think sony will approve of this project, I'm just hoping the PS4 is keeping them occupied so that this team can work on the emulators without any legal bull****. Go RPCS3 team!

Not for current games, but for the old ones I don't see why they'd oppose to that. I mean it's not like anyone will buy and old-gen Xbox, and Xbone already has this backward compatibility. Of course, I don't expect MS to deliver emulation to their current games for Xbone, that would blow the purpose of consoles.

Must have Demon Souls. Absolutely the only PS3 exclusive I want to play. Even considered buying a PS3 just for that, but it s a bit much for 1 game.

When i launched the video i didn't expect the performance to be as good as it was.

Congrats RPCS3, hopefully the emulator will be done in less than 2 years

This is the first demo mind you, this is steps way ahead of when past emulators have launched, hopefully in the next 2 years we will have emulators that can fully support games, go team go! :)

I've never played The Last of Us, so I can't wait to try this game out on the emulator. Also, I hope the xbox 360 emulator finishes, or gets highly advanced, so I can play my favorite halo games again :)

Impressive! But my money is on the xbox 360 emulator, since it seems easier to accomplishe since the cell processor is a bloody beast and probably needs quite some more power to emulate, than the PC like architecture of the xbox 360.

multiplatforms on the ps3 are as easily emulated as on the xbox 360, since 99% of the multiplayform games don't utilize the 7 CUs in the ps3's cell processor, just the regular core.

If this happens then the first game I will try out is MGS4, then GOW3 and then the Ninja Gaiden trilogy, then Uncharted trilogy, and maybe Red Dead Redemption if I care to try it, oh and lets not forget Persona 5 ;)

Nice! Though even if this were absolutely, positively perfected, I'd still take the actual console over the emulator.

I would use the emulator to play my collection of games, that way I don't have to worry about my ps3 breaking down on me like my first one did.

Chances of that happening are slim if you take good care of your system. regardless still the console over the emulator for me.

But it's nice to have an alternative, in case you sell your console and still want to play PS3 games.

Well let's be real, if the console were truly "perfectly" emulated to a T, then given artificial frame rate improvements and increased resolutions, then preferring the console becomes odd. There's also ease of access not having to switch sources on a monitor or move to play your console. Noticed no one really debated and just downvoted. :)

My issue is more about the ROMs. Even if I were extremely unlikely to get caught I still wouldn't do it. Of course if the ROM is a disc you yourself legally obtained and running from the disc drive of your PC or otherwise made into an ISO image yourself then I don't see how that is illegal, but it's using the ROM that someone else made and uploaded to the internet I am concerned about.

You're right. I hope that there would be an option to use the Disc in the emulator instead of downloading ROMs from the net :/

It's not impossible.I have seen PS1 and PS2 emulators that do it so there's NO reason why a PS3 emulator wouldn't be able to do it. :)

but one after another u will need to invest preety much in a pc to make it run an emulateor for ps3 no matter how much they will "optimize" it, will need some preety powerfull hardware, and they will make this right in not less than 2 yrs, so a ps3 then will be so cheaper, is not even worth it
