We all love a surprise. A good one at least, and last week's announcement of Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak and it's January launch definitely ranked up there as pretty great. You may know this as Homeworld: Shipbreakers, but it's undergone a bit of a name change. As a spin-off of the main Homeworld series, Deserts of Kharak is a ground-based top-down real-time strategy game created by Homeworld and Company of Heroes veterans, so it's got some esteemed names behind it.

What little we've seen of it so far looks very neat, with some gorgeous visuals and a return to old-school RTS mechanics which we're a little short of in this day and age. As ever though, you'll have to check out the official Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak to find out if it's coming to Zerg-rush your PC...

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak Minimum System Requirements

  • OS: Windows 7 32-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 3.1 GHz or AMD APU A10-5800K Quad-Core 3.8 GHz
  • RAM: 3 GB System Memory
  • GPU RAM: 1GB Video Memory
  • GPU: GeForce GT 440 or Radeon HD 4890
  • HDD: 8GB Available Space
  • DX: DirectX 10

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak Recommended System Requirements

  • OS: Windows 7 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-950 3.06GHz or AMD FX-4300 3.8GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB System Memory
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 or AMD Radeon HD 7770
  • HDD: 12GB Available Space
  • DX: DirectX 11

There's quite a disparity between these two sets of system requirements, suggesting Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak has been created to work on a wide range of gaming systems. It's a strategy game, albeit quite a nice looking one, so it's not designed to bring gaming systems tumbling to their knees. The minimum system requirements for Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak are actually fairly similar to the Homeworld: Remastered Collection, and it's likely to share similar performance.

The most demanding aspect is undoubtedly the CPU, necessary to cope with a large number of on-screen units. As you scale the visuals upwards though, I wouldn't expect the minimum processors to hold you back in any considerable way.

Where the minimum requirements seemed fairly well thought out and reasonable, the recommended are not. Or I should say, the recommended graphics card requirements for Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak are a little absurd. The GeForce GTX 770 in particular should absolutely tear through a game like this, so it's a struggle to see how a lesser card couldn't max out Deserts of Kharak. The Radeon HD 7770 is also a bit of a mis-match, which tells you all you need to know. On that basis a GTX 560 should suffice on the Nvidia front.

Lastly, there is an optional larger install. This likely includes higher resolution textures and / or cutscenes, and at 12GB it's only 4GB larger than the minimum 8GB installation, so it's definitely worth doing unless you've got seriously limited space or a strict bandwidth cap.

Remember, you can always check out how well your PC can run the Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak System Requirements here, where you can check benchmarking and performance from other users. Compare your graphics card to the Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak benchmark chart.

Looks like Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak has pretty standard system requirements, making it accessible for most players. | Corpus Christi mud and tape

Well, being a fan of the series since the very beginning the specs look right but I find it strange they list the 7770 as a match to the GTX 770...odd...
