Few games are quite as long in the tooth as Jonathan Blow's The Witness. Him and his team at Thekla have been working on this indie puzzler since 2008. That's an eight-year development cycle, which is mind-boggling really.
Everything we seen of this adventure game set on an idyllic abandoned island is absolutely gorgeous, but there's still a lot of questions about what you're actually doing there. All of the puzzles seem to revolve around maze-like conundrums, with the surrounding environment influencing the solution. It's from the same chap who brought us head-frazzling time traveller Braid, so expect a real cranium stretcher. Before you worry about that grey matter of yours though, read up on The Witness system requirements to see if your rig's up to the task of running it.
The Witness Minimum System Requirements
- OS: Windows 7 32-bit
- CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 1.8 GHz or AMD Athlon II X2 265 3.3 GHz
- RAM: 4 GB System Memory
- GPU: GeForce GT 620, Intel HD Graphics 4000 or Radeon X1900
- HDD: 4GB Available Space
- DX: DirectX 9.0c
The Witness Recommended System Requirements
- OS: Windows 7 64-bit
- CPU: Intel Core i3-4330TE 2.4GHz or AMD Phenom II X4 805 2.5GHz
- RAM: 8 GB System Memory
- GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 or AMD Radeon R9 290
- DX: DirectX 10
Down at the minimum you can get away with Intel integrated HD 4000 graphics, which is right down at the low end. This suggests The Witness is going to be compatible in terms of GPU which just about any modern PC.
I think this means we can safely dismiss the recommended graphics card requirements for The Witness. Thekla are a relatively small indie studio and in all likelihood haven't ploughed much time or money into nailing down precise system requirements, instead relying on the components they happen to have already.
Visually The Witness is fantastic, but it's art style capitalizes on low detail textures and relatively basic geometry, and it's difficult to see how a GeForce GTX 750 ti or Radeon R9 270 couldn't max it out, so don't put too much stuck in the recommended specs.
Outside of this though, The Witness' recommended and minimum CPUs are both very reasonable, so you shouldn't encounter too many problems here. The 8GB RAM requirement seems a little suspect though, and I'd hazard a guess 6GB should be more than enough.
