There are some out there that would call an expansion pack for Endless Legend a tad oxymoronic, but it turns out even endless things can have a sell by date. If you’ve somehow managed to see and do all there is to do in Amplitude Studios’ rather beguiling 4X strategy game, then the promise of more to come should pique your interest.

Endless Legend: Shifters was announced via a special live stream celebrating Amplitude’s ‘Endless Day’, with a release planned for April. The annual event is designed to celebrate all of the studio’s catalogue of Endless titles, which also includes Endless Space and Dungeon of the Endless.

The Shifters expansion introduces a brand new faction dubbed The Allayi. Keeping with the theme of the Shifters expansion, the Allayi are able to shift with the seasons in order to adapt to weather conditions - for instance during long winters.

Aside from the new race, Endless Legend: Shifters opens the door for a new type of resource available to all. This additional wrinkle to Endless Legend’s already complex set up has players battling for Pearls of Auriga, which can in turn be traded in for new powers at the Altar of Auriga, along with affecting the impact of the upcoming winter.

Unfortunately we’ve got precious little media to go on, other than a sole screenshot depicting an Allayi unit. There’s a bit of a sci-fi bent, for this unit at least, which looks a little at odds with the kobolds and beardiness of the base game. That said, I am scrunching my eyes up and trying to stare at the low resolution picture below nabbed from the live stream. Who knows.

I have to come clean and admit I haven’t invested serious time in the base game yet, but all I hear are great things when it comes to this fantastical strategy game. Perhaps when Shifters arrives it might finally be time to dip my toes in these waters.

Love EL, but I'm not much of a fan for the DLC model they went for. Instead of adding new factions or units, it would be so much better if they focused on improving preexisting features, like combat dynamics and victory conditions' viability.
