Capcom Reveals Story Mode For Street Fighter V, But Will Not Be In For Launch

Continuing in the fine tradition of fighting games having the flimsiest of reasons for a roster of people to get together and punch each other in the face, or ripping out spinal cords if Mortal Kombat is more your thing, Street Fighter V will be getting a Story Mode post-launch.

Now I don’t consider myself to be a judgemental person, but expect Street Fighter V’s cinematic story to be hideously nonsensical, possible involving world ending events, long-lost relatives, and a fighting tournament which can come along and solve Earth’s problems with a quick Spinning Bird Kick or Dragon Punch.

Before we delve into the post-launch side of things, let’s take a look at the good stuff. Street Fighter V’s story mode will be coming in June 2016 as a free update for all SFV players. Somewhat confusingly it’s set between the events of Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter III. So the chronological order will be 4 > 5 > 3. Right you are Capcom.

Each of the characters will have an individual cinematic story which can be worked through, providing a bit of info on their backgrounds, how they’re somehow related to the other fighters, and no doubt a smattering of nonsense. For people like me who absolutely suck at fighting games, it should provide a neat diversion away from getting pasted online, actually giving players some achievable goals.

Looks kind of neat, yeah? But one important thing to highlight is that this story element arrives in June 2016, around four months after Street Fighter V’s February 16th launch. It’s another example of an incomplete game, pushed out the door early to hit profitable launch windows. Long-time fans are unlikely to have a problem though, as the single-player is seen as an afterthought in comparison to online play.

Street Fighter V is launching on February 16th for PC and PlayStation 4.

Any GD'ers looking to get their Street Fighter on next month? Does the late arrival of the story mode put you off a day one purchase?

No matter how big of a fan you are, incomplete games are unacceptable. It doesn't matter if the feature/s excluded are something you like or not.

I know that, being Capcom, these kind of decisions are probably made by some sort of evil gremling, but couldn't they just ditch the pointless cinematics, ridiculous writing and overall effort that will be put into this and release the characters and costumes for free instead? You know, the stuff people actually want?

Release part of the game for free? How entitled are you?

Can't tell if that's sarcasm or you legitimately have no reading comprehension. What I said is - given the choice between FREE story mode (what we'll get) and FREE costumes-characters, the latter is likely what the majority of the player base would prefer.

Dunno man, but i'm sure i will not pay a single money if some important part of the game missing and then they charge you for more money just to get the part.

Never mind. I misinterpreted Capcom's statements.

Wow, so brazenly selling an incomplete game. Surprised it's free, considering this is Crapcom, wondering if that will be changing post launch.
