Coaster fans are getting spoilt rotten this year. Not only are RollerCoaster Tycoon World and the sublime looking Parkitect in the works, but RCT3 and Elite: Dangerous developer Frontier is also looking to push the management genre further than it's ever been before with Planet Coaster

Offering an unparalleled level of customisation with its building tools, Planet Coaster is described as a "deep simulation". You can sculpt landscapes at will, twisting roller-coasters through tunnels, underneath waterfalls and even through other rides. The possibilities are endless and as such there's plenty of work still to be done on refining Planet Coaster's systems. However, Frontier has released the version Alpha version for eager players to get testing. Check out the Planet Coaster Alpha system requirements and see if your rig is tall enough to get on this particular ride.

Planet Coaster Alpha Minimum System Requirements

  • OS: Windows 7 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-2300 2.8GHz or AMD FX-4300 3.8GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB System Memory
  • GPU RAM: 2 GB Graphics Memory
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 or AMD Radeon HD 7850

As ever, the first thing that needs to be pointed out is that these system requirements for Planet Coaster are a work in progress. Like the big dippers it's inspired by they could go up, they may go down, but they are representative of how the first Alpha release performs.

With that said, these system requirements are far more demanding than your typical tycoon game. That's probably because Planet Coaster isn't your typical game, and you can see from the various footage and screenshots released that it's packed with detail and has massive environments. As such, the minimum requirements are fairly steep for a management game, but compared to the AAA blockbusters out there they're a walk in the (theme park).

While clearly unoptimised at this early stage, the Planet Coaster Alpha does demand some mid-tier CPUs in the Core i5-2300 and FX-4300, along with mid-low tier gaming graphics cards. Should you wish to build a larger theme park then expect these system requirements for Planet Coaster to climb. Frontier is being pretty unabashed about Planet Coasters demands, describing it as a leading AAA game with sophisticated rendering and high poly counts. The better your rig, the better Planet Coaster will be.

Remember, you can always check out how well your PC can run the Planet Coaster Alpha Requirements here, where you can check benchmarking and performance from other users. Compare your graphics card to the Planet Coaster Alpha GPU benchmark chart.
